Overall record doesn't matter from what I make of VC's first post of the thread..
I believe it does matter to a certain extent, just that having a better tournament performance is the prime factor.
The only overall record I would take into consideration even the slightest bit would be the player's overall record leading up to the time of the World Cup you select him from, not what they ended their careers with. So you can't expect me to rate Imran Khan as a world class all-rounder way back in 1975 when he was an Oxford graduate medium-fast (if we're being generous) swing bowler and nothing more than a 8/9/10 jack averaging 12-13 in the Pakistan lineup as both his batting and bowling were years away from being world class at this point.
Still, he finished with a rather impressive average of 11.80 for 1975 exploiting the seam-friendly English conditions and a not particularly world-beating pre-Test Sri Lankan lineup much like a Bhuvneshwar Kumar would in the present day and shall be rated accordingly. Not ordinary, but not particularly earth shattering either.. So that's why I would always give preference to the best performing players in a particular tournament or who made the most difference to their sides.
