Pakistan tour of Australia and New Zealand 2023/24

She knows

Yeah the early signs are not very encouraging. :D

He may get better once he gets some rest too
Yeah, it feels similar to Rizwan's drop in form last year, it was mostly to do with workload, he was back at his best after a break

Pakistan were expected to lose 3-0. Seeing a lot of posts about how Pakistan fought, in reality, there were brief periods of play where they showed some class, but otherwise, it was a tour to forget.

I think credit must be also given to CA for producing sporting pitches. This has always been the case in Australia and we have rarely seen pitch talks doing the rounds Down Under.

I'd rate Chris Rogers as his best partner- was the perfect person to bat at the other end while Warner was in full flow. The worst, at the moment, might have to be Pucovski.

Heartily disagree, this has been the most competitive test series in Australia that hasn’t involved India in years. Wish they had won a test at least because a whitewash does no justice to how Australia had to fight for every victory.

Competitive?

1st Test- thrashing of 360 runs
2nd Test - setting themselves a target of 300+, after having Australia on the mat at 15/4. Any target of 250+ in the last innings is almost like an assured victory
3rd Test- Got all out for 100 odd runs and lost by 8 wickets

If you are referring to specific innings/ periods of play, yes they were competitive, but then, thats always the case with every touring team. To say this has been the most competitive series, where the opposition lost all games, that too one by a margin of 300+, one by 8 wickets is quite fool hardy.

I'd have agreed with your statements had they lost the games by margins of 30-40 runs/ 9 wickets.

Aside from Rizwan, Jamal and Salman (Mir and Khurram in smalls doses) I don't see that much to be excited about. It was close, but close like that time England beat India 4-1.

Much like the World Cup Pakistan, do not look as competitive when Naseem Shah is not there.

Unfortunate for Pakistan they can't play more test cricket so it's difficult to build continuity.

Compared to what every other team has attempted in Australia they were competitive. Almost none of the other touring teams have had periods where they made Australia work hard or had them worrying about a loss. Discounting India and going by the win margins… the last time Australia won by a run difference margin in double digits was in 2016 (their last test loss was also in 2016) and it was against Pakistan… that test was less competitive than the MCG test this time around.

So yeah, they’ve been the second best tourists on these shores since 2016 given that they didn’t have any of their test be affected significantly by weather and didn’t get any of the usual flat pitches that the Aussies serve at least once. That possibly says more about how difficult it is to beat Australia on their turf.

That England series is a good comparison, it could have turned out to be 3-2 or even 2-3 in an alternate world much like this series could have been 2-1 or 1-2.

I’d add Shan to the list of things to be happy about. His captaincy was quite good and he didn’t embarrass himself with the bat. Hamza was also decent given that this is perhaps the least favourable country for him to be touring.

The real concern is their entire batting unit struggling barring the above mentioned individuals. Shafique had a horror tour outside of one innings, Imam’s ceiling was plainly visible, Saud needs more experience in these conditions and Babar looks cooked. If one of Ayub/Huraira work out well and they get Babar plus Saud back on track things will be okay for them.

The lack of tests does mean that there will most likely be a what if associated with this side in the long run.

I'm still trying to figure out how Shan's captaincy led him to bring on his best bowler once the game had virtually been lost.

Pakistan could stand a decent chance next time they are in England. If the pitches that were served up in the Ashes are there, it'll be like being in Rawalpindi. Their flat-track bullies vs England's flat-track bullies.
