At his best Gilchrist > Sangakkara by a country mile.
Today, with Gilly nearing the end, Sangakkara is better.
Anyway, I won't type up a whole spiel but:
Victoria today announced that former Australian skipper and the 2nd greatest ever runs scorer (but obviously better than Lara anyway) Allan Border will skipper the Victorian's in the new PC Cricket League. Border was voted in by his peers, surprising many by pipping out Steve Waugh, a highly regarded former skipper himself. Waugh himself told reporters that Border was the best captain he ever served under (OK, I stole it from his autobiorgraphy), and that he was happy with the decision. Waugh will be vice captain for the series.
Opening batsman Graeme Smith naturally fronted the media, saying that his side would win, in his usual cocky manner:
"We're definitely expecting to claim the league, we have a great mix of former and current greats, a mean batting side with some of the greatest One Day batsmen ever and some great former and current bowlers. Not only that, but we have me, and I'm not even captain. That's how good we are. Allan Border will make a fine captain, and I will be happy to give him some advice when he wants it, and also when he doesn't want. No wonder those Aussies love me so much."
Border said he was proud to be appointed captain by his peers, and said that he was looking forward to the season:
"I'm very excited to begin this, and even though I'm not a Victorian, I feel like Bill Lawry after Merv Hughes or Shane Warne had picked up a hat trick. Stephen (Waugh) is a great leader too, and he and I will be excited to lead this side to victory. I will make sure that we do not let down the state of Victoria down. We are also very happy with our new manager, Dean Sherr, who is a terrific guy and has been behind me and Stephen every step of the way."
He certainly has.
