"Best" is subjective. Even the panelists don't all agree on all of the entries, and the general consensus might still not place us where we'd have hoped to be.
I can't speak for anyone else but I always vote for the best entry I can vote for, because it's fair and tough competition.

Look at the ratings of all the panelists. As you say, different people, different minds, different likes.

I think Avatars is the only hard thing. You have to put all your imagination only in 100x100 pixels which is quite difficult.
