Alight, Scorecard spam incoming.
Since the "run-rate on rails" seemed to be most prevalent in the powerplay I decided to just bowl the first 10 in a bunch of matches. First, 3 times against the same opposition on the same pitch (one that should have something for the bowlers) using different skills of bowling attacks (all on PRO as usual):
I was a bit concerned when my first match was exactly 75-1 which was the standard score before the latest update, but there was some variation in the next two matches. Zimbabwe ended up doing better than Australia, possibly because they got their wickets earlier, and it would be nice if lower-rated batsmen would maybe have a bit more trouble scoring and play more defensively against higher quality opposition.
Next I wanted to see how a really good batting attack did against some lower quality bowling so I went against England as Scotland. First on the same pitch as before, then on one that should be much more conducive to a high-scoring ODI game:
As you can see they made the exact same score both times, making me think that around 70-75 is probably the limit for the AI in the first power-play (on PRO difficulty at least). This could be looked at as well, when the conditions are right they should be able to make 90+ if few wickets go down. For instance in this match the 7th over went for 16 with Roy crushing boundaries, then when he got on strike the next over he didn't hit one off the square and the over went for 1. The good over followed by bad over pattern causes a feeling of predictability to bowling and if addressed could improve the experience a lot.
Some positives are that I had some mishit hole-outs to the infield, there are more streaky looking boundaries, more fours over/through the field rather than just pinging sixes (although they can still hit them) and they seemed able to score throughout the over rather than waiting till the last ball to hit a boundary. Still didn't see any outfield catches but with only 2 men back that could maybe be expected.
Overall I'd say the update was a step in the right direction for ODIs, at least in terms of the first power-play, I'll need to play some full matches next. Hopefully we can continue down this road in future patches.
