Raikkonen creeps closer to Super Licence at Williams Test

Mallory Park played host to its second Formula One team in as many days as Williams-Mercedes put their straight-line speed to the test. The car performed admirably and the three Williams drivers were evenly matched, with their young Finn Kimi Raikkonen topping a time sheet on which all three drivers set 39.1 second laps. This was considerably faster than BAR yesterday, owing to the superior Mercedes engine - Mallory Park has only one major braking zone.

After topping the time sheets, Raikkonen said: "It was okay."

2 Eddie Irvine (Williams-Mercedes) 39.129
3 Johnny Herbert (Williams-Mercedes) 39.173
@Jack Ryder
Disclaimer: I have no idea what the actual lap-time for an F1 car at Mallory would be, but 40 seconds (like Brands Hatch Indy) felt right.

McLaren get valuable Silverstone track time

Mika Hakkinen and Jenson Button both showed their quality as they put their McLaren car through its paces at Silverstone, ahead of the British Grand Prix. They both managed to put in laps at under 87 seconds, while Giorgio Pantano was not far behind with a 1:27.3. Development driver Narain Karthikeyan was some way off the pace, though; you might perhaps have expected more from a British Formula 3 race winner, but this performance reflects his form in the same racing category this season, where he doesn't look like winning races.

"I'm very pleased with today's result," said Test Driver Pantano. "Of course, I would have liked to beat Jenson, but he's a very talented driver. I'm pleased that I could keep in touch with both him and Hakkinen."

Alonso impresses in Silverstone Test

The young Spaniard Fernando Alonso will have taken a step towards securing his Super Licence today, as he regularly traded purple lap times with his talented team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella. They were eventually separated by less than two hundredths of a second, both considerably faster than Alex Wurz or Robert Doornbos.

However, the McLaren test yesterday highlighted just how far this team has fallen from the glory years of 1994 and 1995, as they were two seconds off the pace set by the Woking outfit. "It might be something of a problem, but with Renault looking likely to come on as team owners for next season, we just need to weather the storm," said the team's Chief Designer.

Can't imagine Alonso hearing, Karthikeyan is faster than you. xD
Anyways Alonso continues to impress me and Wurz failed to perform yet again. He need to pull up his socks now.

It ought to be. If I'm honest, I forgot all about it. Will check where I'm up to and quite possibly post the next race very soon.

Williams cash in as Schumacher retires at Silverstone
o-JENSON-BUTTON-2000-570.jpg

For the first time in the 2000 season, a non-Ferrari was on the top step of the podium; instead it was last year's Ferrari man Eddie Irvine who inherited the lead when Michael Schumacher retired from the race on Lap 24. Irvine won easily from last year's Champion Mika Hakkinen, who was too busy looking in his mirrors to fight off Herbert and Barrichello to try to chase down the Ulsterman.

Further down the order, a pair of Honda-powered cars battled all the way to the finish line as Coulthard and Zanardi out-paced their team-mates Sato and Villeneuve. This was Zanardi's second points-paying finish for BAR, while the illustrious Villeneuve has yet to score a single point in over a season with the team.

If Mark Webber was the over-achiever of the day, mixing it with the Saubers, Alesi and Sato for most of the race, the under-achiever of the day was the entire Minardi team. Their day was over before it began, thanks to a clumsy collision on Lap Three which saw their Team Principal hit the garage roof. They remained the only team to DNF both of its drivers until Alex Wurz's Supertec engine soiled itself on Lap 38.

Up to date standings for all who want them. Looks like Benetton are in serious trouble.

Its so disappointing to see both drivers DNF for the 2nd time in four races + Wurz didn't finish for the 3rd time this season. I don't know what I should do currently for Benetton.

We couldn't win even when Schumi retired :facepalm. Somebody's getting sacked next season.

Coulthard always improving race by race. It's unlucky that Sato is not producing such good results.

Barrichello takes victory as Schumacher retires again

news_sport_f1_2002_10_16.jpg

For the second race in a row, Michael Schumacher retired from the Grand Prix, and this time it was Rubens Barricello who secured the victory, the second of his season and of his Formula One career.

Once again, the Ferrari proved to be the car to beat as Barrichello ultimately completed the race 35 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger, the Williams-Mercedes of Johnny Herbert. Until the last few laps of the race, Eddie Irvine as also involved in the all-British battle for third with his team-mate and Jenson Button, but he ended up falling to eleventh and last on the road thanks to a trip into the gravel trap and broken nose cone.

Bennetton-Supertec also eased some fears about their immediate future by bagging fifth place and another finish outside the points, totalling a very handy 300,000 of prize money. Tom Kristensen netted the final point for Sauber, holding off Alex Zanardi for much of the race. The usual suspects of Minardi-BMW, Jaguar-Supertec and Arrows-Zepter populated the ranks of the DNFs.
