Even after my 6-1 thrashing of CSKA in the Super Cup, I was still skeptical of my chances in our first league meeting, just the second game of the season. However, a 2-1 victory away at Zenit had increased my optimism.
I had strengthened my already strong midfield with Nebojsa Marinkovic, a Serbian U21 who cost 2.1m. My weakest area, in defence, saw me bring in Calisto, a pacy Brazilian wing back who got more than 20 assists for Rubin the following season. His cost of 650k pretty much took up my budget of ?3m, and I was therefore left with what I had.
CSKA on the other hand had spent ?8m on talent such as Piero Alva, who had scored 22 goals last season from Right Wing.
The game started slowly, with little to no action until the 19th minute, when disaster struck; Martin Jarinek was sent off for what was described as a 'horror tackle' on Alva. With my right back gone, I had to switch around formation. I moved my three remaining defenders in CB positions, with Mozart, my Defensive Midfielder, staying back to cover.
In doing this, it meant I could push forward my pacy wingers to support the two strikers. It worked a treat up to half time, where I praised the team for there efforts, despite little way of chances being created. It obviously had an effect, as 12 seconds after the restart, Bystrov unleashed a thunderbolt from the edge of the box to put me 1-0 up. Straight away we were pegged back, and I brought off Marinkovic and replaced him with the industrial Titov.
After numerous saves from Khomich in goal, the inevitable happened, with CSKA equalizing after a failure to clear a corner fell to substitute Vagner Love, who smashed it into the net. At this point, I was hoping for anything from the game, so pulled Titov into a more defensive position, and replaced Bazhenov with the young Pjanovic up front. The change worked better than I had expected, as a long clearance fell to Pjanovic, who held it up for Bystrov to break through the defence, round the keeper, and put Spartak 2-1 up on 81 minutes.
The next 9 minutes were all displayed on the pitch, with no less than 14 shots reigning in on my goal; but Khomich was equal to everything. Then, deep into the 5 minutes of stoppage, we broke, and after a fumble by the CSKA keeper, the ball was put into his own net by CSKA's right back, securing 3 points for Spartak.
Final score; Spartak Moscow 3 - 1 CSKA Moscow
