but also if i go into an individual forum section and open a thread into a new tab (e.g. if i am opening 5 threads at once, only the thread i am opening in the existing tab will go to the first unread post. all new tabs go straight to the last post)

That doesn't sound right - are you sure in those cases that the first unread post isn't co-incidentally the last post? There'll be a 'new' indicator on the side of posts that you haven't read yet.

I'll change the links on the front page next time I'm in the admin panel.

Doesn't appear to be possible to change the forum index links to be to the first unread rather than the last post - owing to how the forum makes those links as the 'latest' post in the forum. I'll keep looking, but it's not a simple change as far as I can tell.

You only see your own threads in the contact a mod forum.

Those with temporary bans can. Some users who are permanently banned are unable to - that's intentional.
