I used the Office 2007 Beta 2 when it came out, and really enjoyed its new interface. However, one thing I disliked about Office 07 was that when trying to open a document that has been created with Office 2007 with Office 2003, I was to download an extra converter. So any documents I create at home, cannot be opened due to the lack of a converter as downloads are disabled in my school (yeah, yeah I know how to change that, but not willing to take any consequences
). I do not know if that front has changed, but if it has, it will be one the best productivity suite. But price wise, OpenOffice and Zoho are quite excellent, and become good alternatives of MS Office. After hearing so many praises of OpenOffice today, I decided to give it a try. Therefore I downloaded the
portable version on my 4GB USB Drive, and tried it out. The most frustrating aspect of this suite is its extremely slow start-up, otherwise it's a good substitute of Office, with familiar interface of Office 2003. I used the tweaks suggested on the web, but the application still doesn't run as smoothly as I want it to(perhaps because it is a portable version or may be even because my expectations are too high
: ). I used Zoho for writing a "minuscule"(1300 words) essay(reminder=I am 13), and enjoed its cool suites and wonderful interface. But I will not thwart OpenOffice. I will use all three(Portable OpenOffice, Zoho, MS Office 2003) as they all have to offer something unique that the others cannot.
