BBC News - India census: Half of homes have phones but no toilets

What the actual frick!!!???

Nearly half of India's 1.2 billion people have no toilet at home, but more people own a mobile phone, according to the latest census data.

Only 46.9% of the 246.6 million households have lavatories while 49.8% defecate in the open. The remaining 3.2% use public toilets

And the reach of computers with internet access is still minuscule, with only 3.1% of the population connected.

So basically Indian's on PC, represent only 3% of the population. Wow, I thought India was more developed then this

Well I wouldn't trust BBC's survey but yes whole of India we are talking about then the percentage could be around 30% not 50% as it mentions.

But 100% true about mobile phones. Phones from China are so cheap in India that you get for 1000rs thats 20$ and every tweaking person has it that too not one, they have two three phones now no matter he is rich or poor or a beggar tbh

But under new local laws in states including Chhattisgarh, people's representatives are obliged to construct a flush toilet in their own home within a year of being elected. Those who fail to do so face dismissal.

The law making toilets mandatory has been introduced in several states as part of the "sanitation for all" drive by the Indian government.

The programme aims to eradicate the practice of open defecation, which is common in rural and poor urban areas of India.

Special funds are made available for people to construct toilets to promote hygiene and eradicate the practice of faeces collection - or scavenging - which is mainly carried out by low-caste people.

Also half of India's population stays in Bihir which is like the worst state

About 77% of homes in the eastern state of Jharkhand have no toilet facilities, while the figure is 76.6% for Orissa and 75.8% in Bihar. All three are among India's poorest states with huge populations which live on less than a dollar a day.

Those people there are also illiterate

Male literacy rate is almost double (60.32) the female literacy rate (33.57) in Bihar according to Census of India

Most people connect to the internet via mobile phones. I guess BBC must have missed on that :p

Cant disagree with the mobile and toilet count thingy. There are around 20 Million living in Mumbai itself. Still did not find anyone without a cell-phone. Every kid from the 5th grade has one nowadays. The Chinese cell phones are extremely cheap. They got awesome music quality too. Check this out. This is an exact copy of the Apple Iphone, which only does not support Apple Apps and probably has better music quality.

The worst thing in rural India is the water supply and the population. No one wishes to dirty their home due to shortage, and thus defecate near small water sources. This is the thing most don't like to travel away from cities.

Not to forget, its just around less than 10 years that India has started emerging in the International markets.

It's not the BBC's survery, it's the Indian census, reported by the BBC...

Meh, I'm not getting involved again, but the bottom line is for a country to grow at the rate of an India, Brazil or China, it requires a very large percentage of a populace to be ignored and trampled on. This is what will happen, and the upper classes will get richer as a result of the exploitation of labour, the middle classes will, in some cases, elevate themselves financially, the poor? They'll stay poor and watch as everyone elses standards of living go up. Same thing happens everywhere, and inherent coruption and mismanagement of funds will continue to hamper any attempts to create a legitimate welfare state.

I can guarantee the census doesn't even come close to correctly numbering the homeless and the disparately poor.

Well exactly the rich gets richer and poor gets poorer. I was suppose to say hope this does not cause a controversy and only people who can think open minded discuss on this topic

It's not too disimilar to the banking crisis and outrageous bonuses that causes such furore in the UK.

As you wrote, the rich get richer, and the poor get screwed.

Well, all of this is quite clear if we consider that India is a vast country, and most of the people who represent us on the television and internet hail from developed and industrialized cities and towns which, though are humongous in number, percentage wise might still be considerably lesser. Moreover, not all the people in these towns and cities are prosperous - I know neighbours who still don't have a computer at home.

I live in metropolitan city, and I will tell you that most people don't care about this, and even if they do, they will hardly do anything else than to pore over the newspaper, and complain of the government. Not generalizing to all people, but I have observed this in a majority of cases.

And of course, I completely agree with what has been said by puddleduck and Rohit above.
