RIP World Cup Super League 2020-23 (World Cup Qualifier Jun 16 - Jul 9)

Jeez those are some of the most pathetic highlights reel ever produced. The only boundary from Zimbabwe’s innings shown is one that a spectator catches spectacularly. A bit more of doctoring and you would think Australia actually won that game.
That highlights pakage focusing more on Australia... This may give some justice to that match...

I was speaking to my brother about Zimbabwe beating Australia in Australia and the first thing he said was 'FIXED'.
I guess everytime a upset happens its always fixed. This really annoys me.

That's why I am really happy whenever Pakistan play Zimbabwe, despite the "ZimBabar" taunts. How else to help Zimbabwe improve, if not by playing a good team?

This is close to NZ's best ODI XI, still think Guptill is past it despite that fifty versus West Indies and Bracewell's going to get tonked someday. I'd rather have Phillips in for the latter with Allen in for the former. Get Mitchell bowling too at least for the psychological benefit it would have.

It is still ridiculous that Australia have three deadweights in Finch, Stoinis and Labuschagne in their XI. Finch's always been hot and cold but this is too cold even for his own liking. Him playing as a specialist captain at this point is surely not warranted. Green should be bedded in as the new number four IMO.

What do you think about Carey? Good keeper but clearly lacks the aggressive game for a lower middle-order batsman. And not good enough to bat at 4.

I will give him credit for scoring when the top-order fails.

My thoughts on Carey are complex given that when he was selected initially and propped up as a senior leader I was aghast and very much against it. I still remember me criticising him every time he was about to play only for him to go on and prove me wrong everytime. This was particularly bad during the 2019 WC. :lol

IIRC my opinion on him back then was that despite him lacking a power game he seemed to get the ball into unusual areas to score runs. I did assume that he would be cut off from them once teams figured him out but he’s still doing decently which shows his range of strokes. I did suggest that he could work alongside Maxi as Maxi had enough aggression for them both. With Marsh coming in that middle order too who can hit hard once settled in Carey could work as someone who motors along at a near 100 strike-rate towards the end and stop an early collapse if that happened.

I also agree that he isn’t good enough to bat at four but it seems like he’s being seen as the Aussie version of Latham who can tackle spinners in the middle overs. He feels like someone who is more comfortable being the supporting act rather than a batsman who is expected to score fifties every other game. My main concern would be his keeping, he’s improved there certainly but he’s still error prone.

The only other alternative to him would be Inglis who I rate very highly but it seems like they want to take their time with inducting him into their playing XI even in his stronger formats.

I believe Finch would be out post the WT20. He cannot continue in this vein of form for long now. Australia, will no doubt be looking to have a new leader in his stead. But the questions is still- who?

Carey and Marsh are being touted as potential successors, but IMO, they are just too raw and yet to establish themselves. I see Patrick Cummins becoming Australia full time captain soon. Or, if the ban on Warner gets overturned, we could see Warner lead until the CWC 2023.

Carey’s well established. He’s the first choice in tests and ODIs and is the current vice-captain. Wonder what else the lad needs to do if you think he isn’t established. Marsh is also a first choice in ODIs if he can stay fit but that is indeed a challenge for him.

I’d just give it to Finch’s replacement in the XI, Travis Head. He’s a quality white ball cricketer, has ample captaincy experience for Adelaide and South Australia and has earned plenty of praise for the same. A bit unusual to give the captaincy to a bloke who’s a replacement for the previous one but in this scenario it would work.
