I think that's how you do it, as the odds in NZ are all done with an extra dollar.

Ok let me try to explain it on more time.

Team A -5

Team B +5

Team A is the favorite, that means the bookies think they will win the game by at least 5 points. If you bet on Team A your team has to win by more than 5 points.

Another way to look at it would be to add or subtract it from the final score.

So if the final score is:

20 - 18 ( Team A is 20)

Then subtract 5 from Team A's score and you get 15-18. So Team A loses/Team B Wins

Using the same method

20-18

add 5 points to team Bs final score = 20 -23 and Team B wins the bet/ Team A Loses
