Spot Fixing Scandal Thread: The Legend Continues

BBC Sport - Cricket - England to play ODI against Pakistan despite new twists

"England were furious over reports that Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt told Indian TV that team members were paid to lose the third game. However, Butt has told BBC Radio 5 live: "I definitely did not say this."

"On Monday, he was reported to have told India's NDTV channel: "There is loud and clear talk in bookie circles that some English players were paid enormous amounts of money to lose. No wonder there was total collapse of the English side." However, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Butt said that he was only stating what he had heard and that he had no proof that England's players had thrown the game at The Oval. "The bookies have been talking about it and we will investigate the matter and come up with whatever proof we can provide. The total statement I made [to NDTV] categorically explained that the bookies are saying this. I am not saying this."

Just keep digging Butt
:laugh

Can he get sued now or no, since he's just relating another person / group's opinion?

Sued or not, he effectively ended his career with that statement.

He retires in two weeks so I don't think he'll be bothered. Ruined his reputation forever though however.

Good riddance.

Insomniac added 8 Minutes and 11 Seconds later...

I'd also like to thank Ijaz Butt personally for his tactical nous and intelligence as he decided to come out with such allegations in order to purposely distract the English team, who were reportedly up till midnight or later on the eve of the game worried about his ramblings, which aided Pakistan's victory.

This is what I call taking one for the team.

Pakistan don't need Ijaz Butt's uninformed ramblings to help them win games. I know you are having a laugh but his comments have done far more harm than good. They effectively have lost England as a neutral venue and I would not be surprised if Giles Clark steps down him heading the committee to bring cricket back to Pakistan.

I think England as a home / neutral venue was already lost after the NOTW story came out.

As far as Giles Clark stepping down from that task force... well, idk. If he does, that'll put us in an iffy situation.

We need Ehsan Mani to take over the PCB.

Isn't it weird that all the Butt's that have been involved have been downright assholes?

Pardon my french.

Here is an audio file:

PCB chairman Ijaz Butt denies he made allegations

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt tells Radio 5 live that he himself did not make any allegations against England players, but was reporting what was being said by bookmakers.

I have many friends from Pakistan so don't get me wrong. Pakistan Cricket and the PCB has hit absolute rock bottom. The denials, conspiracy theories, and allegations have made a mockery of the cricket community.

It is high time Pakistan Cricket is given a break until the World Cup. Then they can come back with a strong professional team and a clean board.
