Spot Fixing Scandal Thread: The Legend Continues

It seems to me once again the ICC don't have the balls to actually go through with a decision. Just make a decision now, rather than waiting another month.

----------

I think everyone collectively has agreed here that Amir 2-3 years, Asif 5 and Butt probably 5 or more. The ICC needs to harden up and make the bans now.

I've no qualms with them going over everything and checking to see if they're making the right decision. I'd rather them make the right decision than get something legal arse over tit which lets them off just because they wanted to act decisively.

How about some fines as well? They've obviously made a bit of money over these no-balls.

no, but if you have been imprisoned prior to appearing in court it might. anyway, Mark is right, it's not a court of law so yeah, it's irrelevant if I think about it.
Time served is a consideration for sentencing in British law and the systems that have spawned from it such as Australia and Canada. So too, it's not unusual for tribunals to be styled after the legal system of the country which created them. As such, article 6.4 of the Anti-Corruption Code:
Any period of Ineligibility imposed on a Player or Player Support Personnel shall commence on the date that the decision imposing the period of Ineligibility is issued; provided that any period of Provisional Suspension served by the Player shall be credited against the total period of Ineligibility to be served.

It might just be that ICC is finding it hard to punish the trio based on the current evidence and want to have more time with the stuff to come out with a just decision. I think they have the right approach here. There is no use rushing things considering its the career and livelihood of three people at stake here.

And the credibility of the game, which is way more important.

Verdicts being adjourned for a longer time isn't unusual.

I find his comments "I don't know why someone knew when we'd bowl no balls" so laughable. It's not as if they were marginal, just over, they were pretty blatantly over. I heard something else about the bowler pushing for extra pace, so is he suggesting that is the only time he ever pushes for pace or just a freak that it was the only time his foot was nearer the batsman's crease than the bowling crease?

Perhaps they should offer a lesser sentence for confessing, halve a ban say, not just for this case but any future cases.

Butt is easily the worst of the bunch. How he just bald faced lies after being caught red handed is beyond me. Anything short of a life ban on him will be a massive failure on the ICC's part.

Seems like Asif is a sly fox though, somehow finds a way out of everything.

Although he does have a high-profile lawyer as well, which always helps I guess.

While it's safe to say Butt will be banned for life, I'm interested in what happens to Amir and Asif. I doubt you could conclusively prove that they knew they were contributing to spot fixing (although I'm sure they probably were), so to ban them for 5 years (the minimum punishment under the ICC Anti Corruption laws) is a bit harsh for something you can't conclusively prove.

So they may very well be pronounced innocent and free of all charges.

I seriously don't think they will be pronounced innocent..... Butt is surely going to fall hard. I am not aware of any proof which directly links Aamir/Asif with bowling the no-balls knowing that they were spot-fixing. However, if Asif blames Butt and Butt has nowhere to go then he will probably take both of them down with him.

How can they not have known they were spot-fixing? The captain asks you to bowl a no-ball, there can only be one reason.

Just a thing to say here. Marlon Samuels got 2 years for something that they couldn't even prove. He was punished more by the WICB then the ICC (I guess the WICB wanted to send a message to anyone else).

All 3 in this case need to get at least double that if anyone cares about being fair.

Fairness is (among other things) about admitting and fixing mistakes, not compounding them.

Punishing someone without the relevant standard of proof is simply more corruption. It is easily as corrupt as anything these players are alleged to have done.
