Hey... I thought about it on the other thread. :p

I wouldn't mind looking into it. We should probably decide a development team if we do actually want to do it, so that it is somewhat organized.

I don't know much about how to go about making a simulator so someone else will have to lead a dev team, but I'll mention it in the Cricsim staff forum.

I definitely have a fair idea of how to make it (Cricket Career, anyone?) but there would be some important decisions to make such as how detailed it needs to be, what the UI will be (web or console app or windows app) and other such things. It would also probably be more efficient to complete and more likely if more than one person worked on it.

I don't think detail is worth worrying about too much. Cricsim, despite all of it's downsides, is actually pretty good. Keeps it simple, and mildly humorous (although I reckon we could design one with a few more different lines, the comparisions between our cricketers and Bradman get pretty tiresome) It just has those flaws that need someone to make one from scratch. (e.g. an old no-ball rule which has been changed for a fair while now in cricket everywhere). In general though, cricsim's lack of detail is good.

I think it should still use the same sort of system, each player has a name, batting skill, bowling skill, and the sim does the rest. The sim needs a concept of run rates, as a batsman shouldn't be leaving balls from a part time bowler when the team needs over 10 an over. Similarly, in 4/5 day matches you occasionally see a batsman get about 60 off 30. Doesn't make a great deal of sense.

Also, the UI isn't really that important. What's more important is that it outputs the result to a file or outputs the result on the UI so it can be easily copied on to the forum.

Yes. I think the main change would be to get the rules fixed so that at least we do not have inaccurate matches. I think the current intelligence is pretty simple--probably based on randomness and batting averages.

Possible additions to a new simulator could be as follows, which I think would be valuable:

1. Player attributes--players could perhaps specify an attribute such as "slogger" or "wall" (aka Cricket 07) and maybe they could be limited to 2 (such as Batracer).
2. Players would be unique and would develop over time--so if you transferred to a new team, all your previous performances would actually count. Additionally, players would use the same profile in the PCPL and the PCCSL, so it would be more "realistic".
3. Have specific tailored behavior for Twenty20 games, OD games and FC games. While the current simulator adjusts pretty well based on the number of overs, it does not do justice to the haywire approach that the modern game takes.

I think we need a few more people to brainstorm and probably come out with a specification of what we want to do (if we actually want to do it). As you said, the lack of detail and the ability to conjure up fairly realistic scores nevertheless is a pretty important feature of Cricsim.

Well.. Sorry to be in your thread, But, I seriously feel its an excellent idea to come up with a sim of our own. I'm willing to help with the programming, and if the idea materializes, please count me in.

What tassie said. I couldn't help out much because I don't have much knowledge of creating apps, but I can tell you that if you did make a new sim, it'd be fantastic. Please make it work on Vista though, so I can use it again!

It'd have to work on Vista as it's the only stable dev OS I have currently. :p Perhaps we should start a thread somewhere? I'd be willing to lead initially until someone with project management skills stepped forward.

No problem, I'll also post an announcement for you. Should it be in here or general? I could always do a redirect anyway in both.

Just wanted to mention that we looked at purchasing Howzat Cricket/International Test Cricket but in the end we weren't sure whether to do it or not.

Announcement could probably be in General since the best coders may not necessarily be involved in Cricsim but their experience would be valuable. I will go ahead and start a thread in the PlanetCricket Cricsim League subforum and I guess you can move it if it is not in the appropriate place.

As for purchasing HODI/ITC, those were pretty accurate sims the last time I used them (which was way back when, so I don't remember much of it). Never had the chance to try the full versions, though.

Okay, I created a thread.
