Team Pasty Muncher takes on the world[rFactor & GTR2]

At around 1:17am, on Sunday 21st October, rounds three and four of the SROL (Sim Race Online) WTCC league took place at Valencia. Another pole position for the Team Pasty Muncher SEAT Leon, by nearly half a second, even with an extra 30kg of weight in the car for my performance at Zandvoort. ;)

Race one
The fastest driver (not the championship leader ;)) in the championship didn't arrive until during warm up so he had to start from the back, much to the front runners relief! Another awful start cost me and I dropped to fourth from first. Took third when "Lee Moore" decided to do the right thing and chuck the awful looking green Chevy Lacetti at the scenery. I was soon on the tail of second placed "Someguy_1" in the Alfa and made a late lunge into turn one and just about made it stick, despite both of us going a little wider than usual. I steadily began to catch the leader, who had made a break for it, however, every time I started to reel him in I made a silly mistake and was back at square one. Ran in a comfortable second place for the rest of the race until Bradley Mills (the quickest guy here!) appeared on my rear bumper. He had come all the through from 15th and last to 3rd in what was only a 12 lap race. I managed to hold him off for the two laps he was behind me, cleverly positioning my car so that it would take a miracle move to get by me.

The only downside to this race was the championship leader (Michael Orth) won again!

Race two
With the reverse grid applied, I started 7th, Orth behind me in 8th and Bradley Mills just ahead of me in 6th. Unfortunately me for the BMW gets off the line extremely quickly, you can't make a bad start in it! Orth was leading by turn 1 as all the FWD cars in front of him made bad starts. I made a slightly better start than the FWD cars ahead of me and dived up the inside into turn 1, however, a spinning SEAT Toledo was in my way and I couldn't avoid him. It was quite funny because it helped him get back on the track, but with damage to his car. I emerged out of all that in fourth. Wasn't until turn 1 that things happened again next lap. I had Bradley Mills all over my rear end whilst trying to get by the two cars in front. Moved up to third when the damaged Toledo ran into the gravel. I followed second placed SG_1 closely for the rest of the lap, but then was forced into driving defensively with Bradley Mills trying to get by me. In the end he succeeded by staying close out of the last corner and dragging by my less powerful Leon. Not much I could do, moved across as far I as could, leaving a cars width space (as is right!). So then, down to fourth and sticking with Mills as he caught up to SG_1. They battled for lap after lap, with me hoping that at some point they would take eachother out, I had a great view for any incident that might happen. ;) In the end SG_1 could hold on no longer and Mills went racing off into the distance. I caught up to SG_1 but couldn't get by the defensive master and eventually slipped backwards with the damage from the first corner shunt finally taking its toll it seemed. On the last lap I ran wide in turn 1 and this was enough to give the second awful green Lacetti a sniff of getting past, however, I defended as much as I could as Buggy#27 went flying up my inside and into the gravel, fourth place in the bag. :D

1st, Michael Orth (AGAIN!)
2nd, Bradley Mills
3rd, Someguy_1
4th, Myself

Fairly happy with my pace, second fastest lap in both races behind Bradley Mills, a little miffed I couldn't turn the pace into more points. The starts are really costing me. :(

My BTCC story isn't dead, I've just not really had much time to update the thing. Spent a lot of the last couple of weeks in bed with a chest infection and just about survived the league races without dying! I'll also be using the thread for all my other sim racing antics. :)

From SROL:

Thc city of Pau, France hosted the third round of the SROL WTCC league. The tricky French streets promised to make passing difficult, thus emphasizing a good result in the qualifying session. Notable absentees? for this event included: Bradley Mills, Max Angelo, and EddieB.

For the third event in a row, Stephen Bailey sat on top of the qualifying time sheets with a 1'19"947. Behind him was newcomer Justin Allison by 0.291 seconds. DJB1974 did well to qualify 8th for team FEAR THIS on a grid where the first 8 cars covered just over 2 seconds.

At the start of Heat 1, Michael Orth shot into the lead yet again (the rest of the field is still mystified by his standing starts); amazingly, there was little contact on the first lap considering the layout. There were many battles on track, but little could be done about them as many drivers chose to pressure their competitors force a mistake. The first of the front-runners to flinch was Orth, who carried the maximum 60kg of success ballast. His 320si clipped part of the armco in the last chicane on lap 4, opening the door for Stephen Bailey to lead while Scott_Cazz moved to 2nd position. Justin Allison showed everyone how to make a pass stick by pulling off a fantastic move at the tight Lyc?e hairpin on Lee Moore?s Chevy Lacetti for 4th place.

On Lap 9 Orth would make another uncharacteristic mistake that bunched Allison and Moore together on the Gaston Lacoste Avenue. Unfortunately, Moore?s car pushed wide and edged Allison into the wall, bouncing him across the track and into the grass. Someguy_1 and John Bacho advanced one position while interlocked in a battle for 5th with John changing lines multiple times to keep his position in the SEAT Behemoth. The fight was ruined however by Joe83?s stranded SEAT Leon in the chicane near lap 13. Bacho slowed slightly, but the wreck was unsighted by SG1?s Alfa-Romeo. Bacho went on to finish 5th because of Allison being punted off, but Justin did well to rally back and finish in 6th position, barely passing SG1 at Buisson. Congratulations to Steven Bailey for winning his first SROL race, especially on such a difficult track amongst stiff competition! Scott finished 2nd while Orth rounded out the podium despite his incidents & weight.

Team Repsol?s Phil Harris sat on the pole for the second time in a row for the reversed grid in Heat 2. Trouble emerged immediately as Phil smashed into the tyre-barrier in the chicane while leading the formation lap, knocking off his bumper and hood. The rest of the field avoided contact with him, and watched as his broken machine split the grid to his pole position after everyone else had found their marks for the standing-start. As the lights went green, Orth jumped into the lead by turn 1 from 6th on the grid. Harris? SEAT suffered a lack of front-end downforce, causing a massive first turn accident by touching approximately 6 cars. All of that was but a small noise to the ears of SG1 and John Bacho who were again fighting for position, this time side-by-side into Pont Oscar. Bacho had the inside line and assumed 2nd position with his outpaced machine. Further back there were a couple of small bottlenecks as nerves were rattled after the first corner. Scott_Cazz actually leaped over the edged wall at Foch, getting all 4 wheels off the ground and successfully landing on the circuit with no time lost. SG1 didn?t elect to go airborne at the same corner, but instead smashed part of his front-end on the concrete tyre barrier, dropping him a couple places.

Lap 5, Bacho was alarmed by A. Rdnek?s BMW stuck in the chicane, and slowed slightly for safety. Showing his aggressiveness, Justin Allison capitalized by passing John on the start/finish straight for 2nd position. Stephen Bailey would harass the #1 Team Repsol driver for the remainder of the race in a battle between the old and new SEAT models. On the final lap, Bailey used large areas of sidewalk to quickly close on Bacho through Foch. Coming out of the G?n?ral Poeymiraud Avenue, Team Pasty Muncher slightly tapped the SEAT Toledo, unbalancing his car, but not enough to prevent a late-brake maneuver into the Buisson corner. Out-braking himself, John drifted wide as the two SEAT drivers were side-by-side before the chicane. After banging doors twice, Bailey used discretion by backing off the throttle in such a dangerous part of the course, allowing Bacho to claim 3rd in a car that was seventh on the fastest lap chart. Michael Orth won his 5th WTCC victory of the season from flag to flag, with Justin Allison 10.45 seconds behind.

Next week, Nov 3rd, the WTCC will be in Brnzo, Czech Republic; perhaps the complete opposite of Pau: wide-open and plenty of run-off areas.

I have to say, I had some fun besides having the green plague try to make both my races hell! At least Brno will be alot more open and flowing, so passing shouldn't be such a headache, making a dive on Pau wasn't something I enjoyed, you really had to have a big speed advantage. Sadly for Brno I'll have some of the penalty ballast too....

Stevie drove a brilliant 1st heat, when he got his gap he was gone, 2nd heat he was a little unlucky but was the class of the field in terms of speed (we all know who practised the most now :p)

I checked out this game and I am definetly getting it when I get my new laptop at Christmas. It looks amazing and Stevie's eyecandy makes it look only better. :)

Another weekend, another league race....with 6 laps practice going into it!!

wtccbrnoresult.jpg

The fifth round of the SROL WTCC series was in southeast Czech Republic this past weekend at the 5.403km Masaryk Circuit. Built outside the nearby towne of Brno, this track is popular amongst drivers for its’ wide-nature and varied passing zones. Brno also hosts A1 Grand Prix and several motorcycle divisions.

Coming into this event, Michael Orth held a 19 point advantage over Stephen Bailey, with the former at maximum weight ballast and the latter had just 5 kg less at 55 kg. Scott_Cazz, Lee Moore and Pacman were absent for the race, hopefully they’ll be present next weekend.

By the end of qualifying it was clear the BMW’s would dominate the weekend; the German cars claimed the top 5 grid positions. Bradley Mills destroyed the field with a staggering pole time, 1.353 seconds quicker than his closest rival. Bailey’s streak of 4 pole positions in row would end, the Leon driver started a disappointing 8th position.

At the beginning of Heat 1, Bradley Mills did well to retain the lead, but it didn’t take long for Orth and the pursuing BMW’s to catch him up. Orth became the new leader by lap 2 while Bassett also passed Mills, who struggled to settle his nerves in the opening stages. Going in to lap 3 the lead BMW’s were three-wide coming onto the front straight. Bassett emerged in front while Orth trailed behind. Mills slipped to 4th, the lowest position he’d see before climbing his way back. Max Angelo spun from 5th position in T6, a tricky late-apex left-hander; Max wisely waited for the field to pass before resuming.

Bassett had setup issues with the rear-wheel drive 320si, breaking the tyres loose driving up the hill towards the last complex of corners on several occasions, the first incident allowed Orth to capitalize and resume the lead of the race. By lap 7 Mills battled for the lead yet again and passed Orth on the inside of T2, the fourth and final lead change of Heat 1. With worn tyres, Orth used a bit too much grass in T4, and safely spun to 4th position. EddieB would finish 3rd, with Allison 2nd in a steady and consistent drive while Mills achieved his first SROL victory!

Further down the field, Stephen Bailey had a very quiet race apart from passing John Bacho in the opening lap, content to finish 5th. The two Repsol drivers displayed their lack of team-orders, each giving no quarter throughout the race. During lap 6 the Toledo drivers changed places three times, including a slight love-tap from the team leader. Bacho would eventually finish 6th with Phil Harris relieved not to sit on pole for Heat 2. Unfortunately, DJB1974 wasn’t able to hold on to the final point paying position, missing a brake marker on lap 4 which elevated Max Angelo to the pole. Smokone beached his car on lap 2 and retired in a cloud of…smoke.

Heat 2 had a somewhat silly formation lap. Bassett had trouble finding the keys to his BMW while race-director and SEAT driver, Bacho, stopped to play in the sand. With news that the race wouldn’t be red-flagged, Bacho struggled to get out of the quick-sand, burning a litre of fuel plus his clutch in the process. As the lights went green the two Team Repsol drivers moved to the inside, blocking the momentum of Orth’s usual dynamite start. Max Angelo used his pole position to the fullest and kept the lead with Orth behind him. A train of 4 cars formed behind John Bacho’s 5th place SEAT Toledo Cupra. First Bradley Mills tried to get around him, but ended up losing 2 spots to Justin Allison and Eddie Bassett. On lap 2 Allison was in Bacho’s slipstream, but was forced out wide on the start/finish straight, almost to the pitlane. His BMW lunged past the SEAT, out-braking himself at T1. Finally at T7, Justin pulled a desperate pass in a one-line corner, side-swiping the grey paint off of Bacho’s machine. Bassett had a much cleaner pass on him in the successive corner.

On lap 3, Bradley Mills had another shot at Bacho, but was blocked towards the edge of the grass towards T4 which allowed Buggy to close on the battle. As Bacho resumed the racing line to brake, Buggy tapped the SEAT’s rear bumper which gave him enough room to make it three-wide! Bacho is passed by both cars, but Buggy was elevated two positions by his daring move. Up ahead, Phil Harris felt the pressure from all the cars lined up behind him, allowing a couple to get by. Going into the final two corners Buggy placed all four-wheels off the racing circuit and used Harris as a braking device. Miraculously, they stayed pointed in the correct direction, but the aggressive battle of the previous heat between the Repsol teammates is resumed.

Up at the sharp end of the field, Max Angelo and Michael Orth fought a very close battle for the lead. Orth’s car has twice the success ballast, but is harassing Angelo at nearly every corner. After 5 laps, Orth made a move for the lead, leaving Angelo in 2nd for the rest of the race.

On lap 4, Eddie Bassett lost 6 positions due to a spin in T1, saying “I must have been daydreaming!” Bacho and Harris passed each other several times in 7th and 8th position respectively, all the while losing ground to Eddie who would later pass them both. After the race, Bacho told this reporter:

“Only in the second race did I consider discussing team-orders. In the first heat there wasn’t much to lose as long as we didn’t take each other out. But in the second one, EddieB was catching us up rather quickly. The team lost a lot of time duking it out, even though it was a blast, but we might have had a chance to score more points. Plus the aero downforce was damaged from defending my position earlier in the race, not to mention the tyre wear from over-driving this piece of s--- was hurting my overall time. I’d like to thank our sponsor, A-Style, for having a logo that looks like two people fornicating“.

Other battles of note in the later stages of the race: SEAT must have sent out a memo to drive wide, because Bailey defended 4th position against Bradley Mills as hard as possible. Bailey was making up for his solitary run in race 1, and drove the inside line in virtually every corner to keep Mills behind him. He could only withstand the pressure of the BMW for a lap and a half before Mills got by. Bacho’s tyres finally let go with 2 laps to go, half-spinning his way out of the points. On the final lap, Eddie Bassett attacked the rear bumper of Buggy’s Chevy Lacetti, but was unable to find a way around before the chequered flag. Someguy_1, who was absent during the first race, needed one more lap to claim the final point from Phil Harris.

Michael Orth won his 6th WTCC race of the season out of 8 races, extending his lead in championship to 24 over Bailey; Angelo finished 2nd after battling half the race for the lead; Allison rounded out the top 3 by making up 5 positions.

The SROL WTCC heads to Estoril, Portugal for the November 10th race, a very technical track. Hopefully it suits more than one kind of manufacturer!

On a personal note, two 5th places were more than I was expecting, with the BMW 1-2-3-4-5 in practice and qualifying. Luckily a couple of them cocked up during the races! Might be in the Alfa next weekend....

Damn! I thought you got tired of me beating you, now you're going to a slower car :p. Get into a BMW, it'll do you good, trust me.

Nope, I can't stand it. I tried the Alfa after the Brno races around there and went 2.4 seconds quicker with race fuel on board, however, I am quicker round Estoril with the Leon! I'm thinking of a rotation policy. ;) The Leon just doesn't have any pace round the quicker tracks.

Right guys, first post in here for a while and it's to announce I'll be starting the BTCC over again. I've since discovered various things about AI performance and have come up with workarounds to add success ballast and change starting grids. I will update the first post accordingly so stay tuned for attempt two. :)

In addition to tackling the BTCC, the Sim Race Online WTCC, Team Pasty Muncher will be taking on the Germans (and one South African) in the Polehunters Touring Car Championship. Relations are already strained however after TPM driver, Stephen Bailey, discovered one of the sneaky German's had taken the number 18. After being asked what he thought about it, he gave the following response on MSN:

"******!!!! Someone has 18 already, *******!!!!!"

He declined to comment further.

I can guarantee there were quite a few expletives in there ;) More than what he has given credit for.

Team Pasty Muncher is to expand to two cars in its attack on the Polehunters Touring Car Championship. Justin Allison will drive the number 52 BMW 320si E90 recently purchased by the team. Allison is understood to be enthusiastic about having the now famous "West Cornwall Pasty co." logo on the BMW.

Team Pasty Muncher performance update.

Also been doing some testing around Castle Combe ahead of the various races the team has ahead

I won't be doing too many videos in any updates because Fraps really hits performance quite badly with my new gfx card, for whatever reason.
