The PlanetCricket View: The decline of Australian Cricket

Hauritz doesn't really fit his plan either. Ponting told him to bowl more attacking lines like Harby which didn't suit him and now hes sticking with his old style. I do agree we don't need our spinner getting carted with Johnson already in the side to do that but we do need one that looks more threatening than Hauritz.

Do we have any better spinner than Hauritz atm ?? Doherty looks quite impressive :)

Trent Copeland wont be pick now but i cant help but feel he is exactly the bowler this australian attack is missing.Still think though that Bollinger, Hilfenhaus and Johnson, is still a fairly good pace attack.A solid attack usually comprise of a good hit the deck kind of bowler, and very skilled bowler in terms of swing and an out and out pacer.I think we've got that in those 3 quicks just dat who'll lead the attack and another important thing is how able is an attack to sustain pressure for a lengthy period of time( thats the main weakness if you ask me,ruthlessness against the tail is another weakness. Are those guys really working on mastering the skill of bowling to tail end batsman?

We might get a look at him in the A game, would be good seeing where he stacks up at the next level.

Still raw, O'Keefe has a good record. Doherty might start making a name for himself after his ODI debut. They are the two closest to selection atm.

I think 4-2 win was in ODI series during Australia's last tour. I can't remember them beating India since Sydney 2008.

We won against India 4-2 (ODI) in 2009 at India. India won the ODI series against us at Australia @ 2008.

Simplest way I can say it:

We no longer dominate, but you can't say there is a better team currently than Australia.

I don't think our recent results reflect the talent in the Aussie team lets put it that way. There are still a lot of good players in the baggy green, but everyone is hung up on Hussey, North, Hauritz and to a lesser extent: Johnson. We just need to stop the random collapses and get some more consistent bowling - we'll be fine.

Look at it talent wise, how many Indians would make our XI? Or South Africans? Or English?
From India I'd have 5, maybe 6:
Sehwag for Katich/Watson, Tendulkar for Hussey, Laxman for North, Harbhajan for Hauritz, Zaheer for Bollinger/Johnson. Maybe Dhoni for Haddin, but there's not much in it. I don't think I'd pick Dravid ahead of Ponting.
From South Africa 5 definite and 2 other possibles.:
Smith for Watson, Kallis for Hussey, De Villiers for North, Harris for Hauritz, Steyn for Bollinger/Johnson, Amla for Ponting probably too on recent form, possibly Morne Morkel as well.
From England only 3 definites, probably 4:
Trott for Hussey, KP for North, Swann for Hauritz, Broad for Bollinger/Johnson - but it's pretty close. Prior and Haddin are about equal. Anderson and Hilfy are similar too.

The difference between AUS & IND & SA is that thanks to the poor AUS selectors. AUS haven't picked their best balanced test XI in 2 years properly IMO.

While SA & IND basically have been picking their best XI continiously.

Once AUS get rid of North & Hauritz (maybe Hussey). Get youngsters like Hughes, Ferguson/Khawaja in & pick 4 quicks consistently. The batting collapses will decrease, the bowling attack will be the best in the world & pretty soon they will be ahead of SA & IND.

Can't help but agree with you this time. Our best team haven't been chosen in test. The team selectors have chosen are below India and South Africa.I have a feeling it might have been quite different had I been a selector:) .Hughes would be there , Khawaja sure would be there , Smith wouldn't be seen as a specialist spinner because a specialist he is not,Hauritz would play but would depend on conditions( got to be a ragging turner like what we saw at the oval), there would be more horses for courses selection. Also Johnson would be on a knife edge to keep his place.Bollinger and Hilfenhaus would be lock in as our test opening pair( thankfully they have this one spot on).Siddle would need to prove himself in domestic cricket before entertaining thoughts of getting his pick back.Harris would be my 4th quick.Ofcourse Copeland would be very near to the playing 11.

Yep. Who would have thought a selection panel could cause a team to struggle so badly as the current AUS selectors have done. This is the last thing i would expected post Ashes 06/07 & IND/SRI 07/08 when all the greats left.

.All they need to do is
1Admit this side selected isn't the right team as shown by the results
2Admit they've made quite a few selection blunders
3. go back to the basics of a test side and stop trying to out thinking themselves with some crazy selections like White or Smith as specialist spinner,a failing North at 6 because he offers a spin option- why should failure in your main discipline be covered because someone is a useful part timer?Acccording to Hilditch Hussey has been a great player and averages 50 in test so you cant over look that????Does he not have any idea what Hussey averages in the last 2 years???And how is averaging 84 in 20 test and 35 since then makes one a great player?? The world great should only be reserve for the elite.I love Hussey and i've back him up a fair deal but there's no sense now hanging on in the hope he turns it around, his credit in the bank has surely run out.Btw the basics of a test side is you pick your best 6 bats included in that would be your 2 best opening bats. And your best 4 bowlers since we aint have any great bowlers there should be more horses for courses selection like Hauritz only on ragging turners.
4.Realise that 21 -25 isn't too young to be selected, if you're good enough you're old enough. Its just ridiculous that some ppl see a 24 year old Khawaja as being too young, Are we serious? If we aint gonna pick them at 24 when they're good enough when are we ever gonna pick them.Should we wait when they're in their 30's and can average really good in their first 20 matches but offer you nothing much after that ala Hussey?
5.Well maybe the only solution now is just to sack all of these selectors, not Chappell:) cause i think he'll do a good job.
