The FM Elimination Challenge (June 2026)

Did Ollie ever win that world player of the year award I said he'd get ages ago?

Ollie Holden's career awards:
2x Coca-Cola Championship Team of the Week
6x Barclays Premier League Young Player of the Month
3x Barclays Premier League Player of the Month
6x Shortlisted for World Footballer of the Year
1x English PFA Player of the Year
1x English PFA Player of the Year Runner-Up
1x adidas? Golden Ball Runner-Up

No World Player of the Year just yet. Shantanu's been shortlisted for World Footballer of the Year nine times has well but has never won it. In fact, no competitor has ever finished in the top 3 of the World Footballer of the Year. :noway

Sixteen years down, two to go

horiz_line.png

Welcome to another update and now there are just two years remaining in the competition until we announce the winner of the first ever Elimination Challenge. Shantanu is currently holding a very good lead and it will take a miracle from Ollie to catch him. However, this challenge isn't always as straightforward as it seems and here is another mysterious event that I planned towards the start of the challenge...

In the last two years of the competition, the points will be tripled. That doesn't apply for this update, obviously, but from here to the finish all points earned will be worth triple. I made this rule when I was thinking about players retiring and I realised that one of the most interesting parts of the career is the declination and where a player decides to move once they get old. This challenge isn't always about dominating at your peak and so the points that the competitors gain once they are a bit older will be tripled. Will this be enough for Ollie to catch up?

Some of the World Cup Qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup have started, although only three teams have qualified so far for the upcoming World Cup - Japan and South Korea through the Asian qualifying section as well as China who will be hosting the World Cup. In the Under 19 European Championships the English youth held strong to defeat the French 3-2 in the final with Spain and Sweden bowing out in the semi finals. Spain also won the final of the Olympic Games, or effectively the Under 23 tournament as they defeated Italy 2-1 in extra time.

The main international tournament was of course the European Championships though, which were run in 2024. The group stages saw some big results too, with Spain finishing bottom of their group against Italy, Austria and Ukraine as well as Germany missing out on qualification after finishing third behind Sweden and Croatia. Ireland, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Slovakia and Serbia were also all sent home from the group stages.

The quarter final only produced one major upset, with Belgium holding their nerve from the penalty spot to defeat Italy after a bland 0-0 draw from 120 minutes. England triumphed comfortably over Austria with a 2-0 win - captain Shantanu Rooney playing superbly and laying on two assists while Holland and France eliminated Sweden and Croatia respectively. In the semi finals, England were drawn to play France and their luck ran out as an own goal from one of the best players in the world in the young Barry Carter saw them fall 2-1. Belgium also produced a huge upset once more, continuing their fantastic tournament by defeating the Netherlands 1-0.

The final saw 80,000 fans flock to see France take on Belgium and I'm willing to bet that nearly all of them would've been shocked with what they saw, after the giant slayers Belgium continued their dream run with a goal in the 36th minute through their 26 year old captain Roel Benker, who plays for Manchesterr City. France couldn't find the equaliser and Belgium were the European champions.

Over to our two competitors and we will take a look at Shantanu Rooney first this time. After initial fears that Shantanu Rooney was slowly declining and getting a bit older and less talented, he struck back at critics this season with one of his best ever seasons, as he scored 37 times in 54 matches with an average rating of 7.71. Despite his value being cut in half, Shantanu remains one of the world's best strikers and evidently still has a bit more to show. Ollie must be cursing his luck to be up against what appears to be a half man, half machine who can make scoring seem like one of the easiest things in the world. The awards flowed for Shantanu as he was named in the La Liga Team of the Week six times over the year, as well as being the La Liga Top Goalscorer for 2024/25 and also being shortlisted for the 2024 World Footballer of the Year. Shantanu also captained the England side on nine more occasions and found the net on five of them which has well and truly earned him a reputation of the best ever English striker in history. Is there no stopping this man?

Ollie Holden struggled a bit last year after starting only 28 matches for Manchester City so, very intelligently, he decided that a new club would be best for him if he was going to keep up with Shantanu and he found an excellent home - Villarreal of La Liga. He signed for a casual $39M AUD and had a great season, making 44 appearances and scoring 9 goals with 10 assists also to his name. He really stood out and averaged 7.32 in all competitive matches - unfortunately though, that isn't quite enough when you are up against the likes of Shantanu Rooney. He continued to impress for England but simply isn't at the same standard as Shantanu, although at 32 years of age he will be praying that Shantanu loses some of his pace and acceleration which might cost him up front, while Ollie will retain his mental skills which are so crucial for a midfielder. That really is Ollie's only hope now, or else he is doomed. Remember though, the points will be tripled so if Ollie wants to make a move he has two years to somehow catch Shantanu, whose lead is worth around 800 points.

Loving the fact that the points get tripled now! I think this is gonna go to the last year and it will be quite tight.

If you have time, could you just give a short update on my career? Last time I heard I had moved to Everton and was rapidly approaching 100 caps for Russia.

Yep, sure. I am holidaying for June 2026 so currently it is up to November 2025 (takes ages to do it, about 120K players on the database) so I will give you an update from there.

You've gone pretty well at Everton, averaging just below 7 like you have for the majority of your career in the league. The 2024/25 season was your best ever season though, despite being 31/32 years old. You played 35 matches, provided 7 assists and even scored once, averaging 7.11 in all competitive matches. You also now have 85 caps for Russia, although you are nowhere near the record - a 39 year old Igor Akinfeev has 162 caps and is still captaining the squad. You've also picked up 4 red cards in the past two seasons at Everton, as well as one for Russia a couple of games ago.

Not bad at all, it has to be said.

Cheers Blake. Sounds like my player is absolutely perfect to my desired style. 5 reds in the past few seasons, brilliant! I'll play until 45 if need be to break Akinfeev's record :p

33 years old, and just one year left to live

horiz_line.png

The Elimination Challenge is nearly over and there remains just one year left in the competition before it finally ends. The players have both fought fiercely, but it seems like it might not be such a close finish after all with Shantanu Rooney pulling ahead and leaving Ollie behind, making victory just about impossible for the Holdenator. The 2026 World Cup hasn't been played yet but qualifying is well and truly over and the groups have been drawn.

Taking a look at the 2026 World Cup Qualifying, and Ghana and Nigeria were the two main exceptions from the event, with Tunisia and Mali qualifying ahead of them in their respective groups. South Africa, Egypt and Ivory Coast all qualified with relative ease in a fairly straightforward qualifying campaign.

The Asian qualifying was fairly routine as well, with Japan, South Korea, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Iran all qualifying. Saudi Arabia were the most impressive team, taking 21 points from 8 matches to finish comfortably top of their group ahead of Australia while in Group A it was Japan and South Korea qualifying. The United Arab Emirates took on Iran in the playoff and despite being 3-1 down after the away leg, it was Iran who pulled out a 4-1 victory to qualify for the final playoff against New Zealand. The Kiwis never stood a chance however, going down 7-1 on aggregate and failing to qualify. China also came through out of the Asian teams, although that was by default as they are hosting the tournament.

In North America, it was the US, Mexico, Canada and Honduras who all qualified, with Honduras defeating Ecuador in the playoff between the two Americas. USA topped the group, losing just two out of ten matches with Mexico a close second. Jamaica were by far the worst team, earning only a single point in the group thanks to a fortuous 3-3 draw with Canada. In South America the group finished as expected as well, though Uruguay and Paraguay may be a bit disappointed they failed to qualify. Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia were the four teams to go through; though just three points separated the 8th placed Paraugay from the 4th placed Chile in a fairly tight qualifying group. Even Bolivia didn't disgrace themselves, finishing last despite earning 14 points from 18 matches.

Finally over to Europe where one of the most straightforward qualifying campaigns ever took place, with no real big nations missing out. The highest profile countries that missed out from the qualifying would arguably be Turkey, Russia and Greece - however, all the big nations got through. Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and England all topped their groups comfortably to earn qualification while Serbia, Denmark, Sweden and Ukraine went through despite finishing second. The Czech Republic and Croatia both won their relatively easy groups and will also be heading to the World Cup in China.

The groups have been drawn and Group D remains the hardest group by a mile - easily the group of death, with no other group near in contention. It features Spain, Ivory Coast, Argentina and Mexico and should feature some highly entertaining matches. Group B is also a relatively tough one, with Australia, Ukraine, the USA and Croatia taking place in what should be a very competitive group and Group E will also be very tough for Japan and Colombia as they face European giants Portugal and France.

Here's all of the groups:
Group A: England, Denmark, Mali, Iran
Group B: U.S.A., Ukraine, Australia, Croatia
Group C: Italy, South Africa, Sweden, Canada
Group D: Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Ivory Coast
Group E: Portugal, France, Japan, Colombia
Group F: Germany, Chile, Honduras, China
Group G: Holland, Serbia, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia
Group H: Brazil, South Korea, Czech Republic, Egypt

It should be an interesting World Cup, which I will cover briefly in the final update.

To the players now and as I mentioned earlier it looks like it won't be a tight finish, with Shantanu Rooney comfortably extending his lead in the triple points period thanks to some handy international appearances giving him a handy boost. Despite being 33 years old, Shantanu Rooney kept his spot for many of the matches and he still remains very fit, although his pace and acceleration is now well down from what it once was in his heyday. He is still valued at $12,250,000 and if England have a good World Cup campaign he may just end up breaking the 100 caps mark, which would be a huge achievement. This year for Real Madrid, he ended up playing 41 matches which is a fantastic effort for a striker of his age, though five of them were as a sub. He scored 28 goals and still managed to average 7.46 for the year. Although it is down on his previous tallies, for someone of his age it is a great effort and when you are still playing at the highest level at that age it is always going to be very hard for anybody to catch him on the leaderboard. It was yet another relatively injury-free season for Shantanu, with his only injury a stubbed toe keeping him out for a week. In fact, Shantanu hasn't been out injured for longer than a month for over twelve years - the last incident was in 2014 when he tore his calf in a match.

Ollie Holden hasn't been quite as lucky, with an injury list over his career stretching far longer than Shantanu's. This season wasn't terrible for him, however he sprained his ankle on the 5th of April which ended up keeping him out for the rest of the season and hurting his chance to gain some points on Shantanu. Overall it was quite a reasonable year for the veteran midfielder who made 38 starts for Villarreal and averaged a respectable 7.42. However, Shantanu made just a few more international appearances than him and earned a few more Man of the Match awards, which proves to be the only thing that has set these two players apart over the year in terms of points. Ollie will have to be fairly happy with his year, and he is still one of the key players at Villarreal, but he needs more than a miracle now to catch Shantanu Rooney, and it appears highly unlikely that anything will come together in just one year. Still, if Shantanu picks up a serious injury that ends up keeping him out for a number of months it is still possible for Ollie to overtake Shantanu, although Ollie will need to have a great, injury free year to maximise his earnings on the triple point bonus.
