The FM Elimination Challenge (June 2026)

Sorry about the delay, I've been running another competition like this one and it's quite time consuming.

Holidaying through the months now, should take a few hours before we make it to June 2022.

I do know that. That's what got me to come to this thread and see if there was an update coming soon considering you are posting more updates on the SI forums than here.

I enjoy reading Blake's stories. They are always exciting! :)
Looking forward to your update. Expecting an SR win. :D
and Hedger being booted out! :p

Nah, I'm going to score 50 goals in the season, while Ollie and Shan get injured and I survive by a point by the next elimination and then go on to win it.

After a bit of a break I'm back and it's time to return to everybody's favourite elimination challenge on the block... well, there is only one of them, but still. We are returning in June, 2022, a year after our last update, and this is of course the last non-elimination year before we eliminate someone and take it down to two people.

Later this year the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be contested. It is going to be held in the U.S.A. where Brazil will be defending their 2018 title. The groups have been drawn, and although there is no rule group of death there are a few ominous ones. Group D looks the most evenly-matched with the hosts U.S.A. up against the Netherlands, Australia and Uruguay, although Group H probably contains the best teams. Group G looks by far the easiest.

I've predicted the order of the groups that I think they will finish in.

Group A: Brazil, Mexico, Norway, Senegal
Group B: Russia, Croatia, Honduras, Tunisia
Group C: Turkey, France, Algeria, Canada
Group D: Holland, U.S.A., Australia, Uruguay
Group E: England, Ivory Coast, Israel, Iran
Group F: Argentina, Japan, Switzerland, Jamaica
Group G: Serbia, Cameroon, Georgia, North Korea
Group H: Germany, Portugal, Chile, Saudi Arabia

Notice a few big teams missing? Yep, that's right. The second and third best teams in the world in Spain and Italy both failed to qualify. Serbia and Norway finished ahead of Italy in their group while Spain finished below Turkey and Ukraine. Hedger's Sweden missed out on a spot behind Israel while Greece also missed out. In Africa, there were also a few big teams missing out. Tunisia went through at the expense of Ghana while South Africa missed out after Cameroon held on strong. No Oceanic teams qualified from their set-up after New Zealand were thumped 5-0 away by Iran before holding on to a 0-0 draw in the home leg to send them out with the winner deciding who makes the World Cup Finals.

Back to the competition, and it seems that the World Cup Qualifying has somehow managed to stop the remaining competitors from playing as many games as they have been used to each year - well, except for Shantanu Rooney. While Ollie and Hedger only played 31 competitive games after international games managed to keep them out at club level, Shantanu somehow played at the same time for Real Madrid. The man is a freak show. He managed to play an impressive 46 games and continued to score at the highest level, netting 35 times over the season for the Spanish giants. He wasn't at his best internationally with only 3 goals in his 7 international matches over the year - a big let down now for his ridiculous standards, but nobody really cared. At the age of 29, Shantanu Rooney is still going as strong as ever in his twelfth year at Real Madrid, and he continues to bring in the awards as well. This season alone he was shortlisted for the 2021 FIFA World Footballer of the Year, named in the Liga BBVA Team of the Week four times, won runner-up in the Liga BBVA Top Goalscorer, won runner-up in the UEFA Champions League Golden Boot, was runner-up again in the UEFA Champions League Best Player and of course he was named in the UEFA Champions League Dream Team. And that was just over the course of twelve months. Surely Shantanu Rooney must run away with this competition now - his lead is growing each update. Ollie must be praying for a long-term injury over at Shantanu's camp.. and then retirement. Who knows?

At Juventus, Hedger became as good as out after he fell further behind the competition with Ollie gaining more points on him. Hedger needs around 1,000 points to survive the next elimination... which is not even possible, of course. To let you know, that would require him playing around 150 league matches, with 30 of them seeing Hedger become Man of the Match.. and then he would also have to make the Best Eleven and play around 5 internationals for Sweden as well. It's possible... with a timeframe of ten years, maybe. But we don't have a time traveller, and so for Hedger he seems doomed unless he can survive long enough for a time traveller to be invented. Reviewing his season and he made just four more appearances for Sweden, taking his tally to 62 caps with 45 goals scored for his country. He is now just ten goals away from Zlatan Ibrahimovic's record, which looks certain to be beaten now unless Hedger does something stupid and decides to take up Brazilian nationality. Hedger supposedly wants out at Juventus - he is looking for a bigger challenge, but unfortunately for the old competition leader his boss is having none of it and it seems he is destined to end his days at the Italian club. This season he returned fairly good figures, scoring 22 goals in 31 starts. He also appeared twice off the bench for Juve, and overall he couldn't really complain. With that said, it's nowhere near enough to keep him in the competition and we will be waving goodbye to him next year.

Finally, we have Ollie, who sits perched in the middle of the two and it looks like he will struggle to move from that position. He needed a big season to start gaining some ground on Shantanu but the striker from Real Madrid was too good and ended up playing 15 more competitive matches than him over the years. Ollie has also announced that he wants more of a challenge to progress his career with City allegedly not interesting him enough. That seems a strange call after City won the Barclays Premier League for the fourth straight year - I'm not sure how he can progress his career much further. Unfortunately for City, they were knocked out in the Champions League in ridiculous fashion to Italian world-beaters Genoa. After losing 2-1 in the away leg, City knew they needed a much better start - and they got it. When young German midfielder Felix Fleischer scored in the 5th minute and then Carlos Vela, a 133 caps / 97 goals veteran for Mexico, converted a penalty, suddenly City were looking the goods. 2-0 up at home, 3-2 on aggregate and everything was smooth sailing. Ollie himself was next to contribute, smacking one home from outside the box and it was 4-2 on aggregate to City at half-time. Genoa looked lacklustre and they continued to be as Portuguese wing back Marco Xavier scored in the 53rd minute to make it 5-2 on aggregate. City were flying high at this stage, but suddenly Ollie picked up an injury and was forced to head off. Moments later Oliver Paulus scored in the 68th minute for Genoa. 5-3 on aggregate, but not a whole lot was looking likely and ten minutes later the scores hadn't changed. There were a maximum of ten to fifteen minutes left in this match, but that was enough for Genoa. Thibaut Courtois, the Manchester City goalkeeper was sent off after handballing outside the box and it was Iker Muniain from Genoa who smashed home the free-kick as a result around the wall in the 80th minute. City then did the unthinkable, turning the ball over to Portuguese striker Nelson Oliveira who coolly slotted the goal. The match ended 5-5 on aggregate, with Genoa through on away goals. Ollie himself was solid throughout the year with 10 assists and 4 goals scored from 31 matches. He maintained an excellent average rating as usual but he's going to struggle to catch Shantanu now.

I still believe the formula is biased towards strikers and them being able to score more often. Unless there twists from here on in, it looks like Shan's for the taking.

May I inform you Ollie that the amount of goals scored per season has absolutely nothing to do with points?... ;)

I didn't have a very complicated system for points scoring, now that I look back. I've made a new one for my new challenge on SI which is like this but far far more detailed. This one only calculates the league games played, international games played, any Best XI awards and any Man of the Match awards... and that's it. Nothing else. Nothing to do with value, wages, how long a player has spent at a club, or any other kind of awards..

it's still biased towards goal scored! :p. Naa I'm kidding, you are going great guns with this, loving it! I still remember my SAF Academy which was a spin off of The Spins 'Special One Academy'

Any chance of a cheeky update on myself? Happy to see Russia qualify and get a fairly easy group in the World Cup.

Could I get a history screenshot of my player, Blake. I want to know how I have progressed over the years in terms of stats without having to look at 15 screenshots. Anyway, unfortunate that I will go out.

30 years old, when's retirement?

horiz_line.png

Yes, the players are now all 30 years old, which seems quite amazing really. There is quite a bit to cover in this update, what with the 2022 World Cup as well as reviewing the remaining players and the elimination which will leave us with just two competitors remaining. However, first of all, we will take a look at the players who could have been.. but never were.

The first ever elimination in the first ever Elimination Challenge saw Treva's departure, after his cruel transfer to Metalist was delayed until 2011. This became a shame for Treva, who has gone on to shine after featuring at such clubs as Villarreal, Everton and Chelsea where he spent the majority of his career. Treva has earned himself a reputation as one of the best defenders in the world, and he has become one of the best defenders ever to play for Russia in their history, with 71 caps to his name. He went on to make 376 appearances for Chelsea, before moving to Everton two seasons ago in a deal worth $27.5M AUD, where he continues to excel in the Barclays Premier League.

The next elimination was Covvy, who despite showing brief potential didn't deliver and was eliminated after stagnating at Valencia. However, he has gone on to shine - despite never really settling in at Valencia, he eventually moved in 2015/16 to the English money throwers Manchester City. He has become a crucial player for them, and the 2022/23 season just passed has perhaps been his best for them, as he scored 26 goals in 38 matches. He has had a fairly good international career, scoring 11 times in 25 games for England, and he has partnered Shantanu Rooney up front on many occasions.

The Spin was next to leave, with Genoa barely playing him at all resulting in him earning little points. He, just like Covvy, joined Manchester City in 2013/14 in an expensive deal for $37.5M. He has made 171 league appearances alone, scoring 81 goals in the Premier League, and has made numerous more in cups. He has also been very successful at international level with 31 goals in 56 matches, and he remains just thirteen more goals away from the Swiss all-time record.

Goalkeeper User2010 was eliminated in 2012/13, although he never really got going afterwards. He has made only one appearance for England in his entire career, with England preferring Inter Milan keeper Ray Jones for a long time and now young star Steve Daniel. User2010 struggled at Arsenal as well, making just thirteen appearances in seven years and after a free transfer to Palermo he failed to start for them as well. He was finally passed on to Malaga for $10M where he has had some reasonable success, playing 23 matches in La Liga in the best season he has had since he joined Crystal Palace or Sheffield United on loan in the Coca-Cola Championship back in the days when he was still a competitor.

The Welshman Giggity Giggity was next to fall in the 2013/14 season, and despite scoring 14 times in 41 matches for Wales he has never been a star. He has spent his time in the Championship but has never succeeded in the Premier League at all. After time at West Brom, Huddersfield, Young Boys and then Huddersfield again on a free transfer, Giggity Giggity has never really succeeded until now. He moved on a free transfer to Reading in the Championship and has scored 17 goals in 32 matches over the year. He seems to be happy enough there and it looks like Giggity Giggity was never destined to be a star.

MaD fell after Giggs after he didn't play enough at Chelsea to keep him alive in 2014/15. He never learned though and spent ten years at Chelsea, despite making only 81 league appearances. He finally moved to Middlesbrough on a cheap deal, who then passed him on for a bargain deal of $32.5M to Arsenal. Despite playing in a whopping 50 matches over the past season, he hasn't been brilliant for them and it is only now that he has really started earning any decent points at all. He has made only 2 appearances for England, scoring 1 goal.

Maney2k9 was next to go, with the Irishman struggling after a spell at Southampton left him in trouble. He left to Germany in an attempt to revive his career and despite frantic moves to Wolfsburg and Dortmund he was soon eliminated. It is Dortmund where he bides his time still now, and he has become a star for them, dominating the Bundesliga. His average rating has remained around 7.5 in every season that he has played for them and he has gone on to score 12 times in 41 appearances for his country, Ireland.

Next we have Nakul, who fought bravely and strangely enough is the only player never to be capped at senior international level, despite an excellent youth record for Spain. He dominated the early years of the competition and it looked like he would be a huge threat, but he faded out disappointingly and finished in fifth position only. He holds a remarkable achievement though as being a rare one club player - since joining Valladolid on the second of August, 2009, he has still not left them, despite their recent relegation after hanging on in La Liga for over twelve years. Nakul has played at Valladolid for 5050 days, or over 420 months, and yet still remains happy there. He scored 24 goals in 39 games in the season just passed, although Valladolid disappointingly lost in the playoffs and will spend another season in Liga Adelante.

Next we have Mattfb, who escaped elimination more times than any other in the competition. However, his luck finally ran out despite an excellent run in the competition and he went down with a good showing. Mattfb has excelled meanwhile at Barcelona, becoming their first choice goalkeeper after a $40.5M transfer and he has rarely been dropped since joining there. He also remains Italy's best goalkeeper, with 41 caps for the Italians and he is definitely a star player and a well-known one around the world.

Finally, we have Hedger. It's no surprise that Hedger is going home and so I may as well list him in the past players. A great career for Hedger finally ends with Juventus' lack of continental competition the downfall for Hedger. After ten seasons at the Italian giants it seems that his time may be just about up though, as he played only 25 competitive matches last season. He did score a handy 18 goals but his attributes are declining and the tall target man may soon find himself replaced for younger blood. Hedger did well to finish third, but this is where it ends for him. He remains very successful at international level, playing 64 matches and scoring 47 goals for Sweden, and he still has a chance of breaking Ibrahimovic's record of 55 international goals.

Of course, the 2022 World Cup in the USA! It looked set to be an interesting one, with a number of big countries out - Spain and Italy from Europe, Ghana from Africa. Last year I predicted the group stages would finish like this:

Group A: Brazil, Mexico, Norway, Senegal
Group B: Russia, Croatia, Honduras, Tunisia
Group C: Turkey, France, Algeria, Canada
Group D: Holland, U.S.A., Australia, Uruguay
Group E: England, Ivory Coast, Israel, Iran
Group F: Argentina, Japan, Switzerland, Jamaica
Group G: Serbia, Cameroon, Georgia, North Korea
Group H: Germany, Portugal, Chile, Saudi Arabia

As it turned out, my predictions were fantastic with Group F and Group D the only ones defying in me in terms of the two teams that would go through. Here were the actual standings:

Group A: Brazil, Mexico, Norway, Senegal
Group B: Croatia, Russia, Tunisia, Honduras
Group C: France, Turkey, Canada, Algeria
Group D: Uruguay, U.S.A., Australia, Holland
Group E: Ivory Coast, England, Israel, Iran
Group F: Argentina, Switzerland, Japan, Jamaica
Group G: Serbia, Cameroon, Georgia, North Korea
Group H: Portugal, Germany, Chile, Saudi Arabia

This World Cup was almost surprising in that regard - there were barely any big nations eliminated from the group stages, with Holland being the only big team to be eliminated. This meant that there would be some interesting matches ahead in store for us...

The second round started with Brazil narrowly defeating the Russians despite going 1-0 down early, with Pato providing the winner in the 78th minute. The Brazilians were out to defend their title, and it took a scrappy outing for them to progress to the quarter finals. Next up it was Croatia comfortably beating Mexico 2-0 thanks to a brace from Andrej Kramaric, who has an impressive international record of 53 goals from 55 matches for the Croatians. Then we saw our first big win - a second minute goal to the USA saw them defeating France, who looked very disappointing. One goal was all it took and USA held on for the rest of the match, winning 1-0.

After that came a very good match, as Turkay took on Uruguay. It was the South Americans who took the lead before half-time, with Abel Hern?ndez scoring in the 41st minute, but with the match seemingly headed towards a Uruguay win it was young Turkish centre forward Serkan Kaya who popped up to score a great goal in the 84th minute. With the match unable to be decided in extra-time, it was Uruguay who triumphed on penalties after the pressure got to be too much for ?mer Toprak as he sprayed his penalty giving Uruguay a 5-3 win.

The next match wasn't quite as exciting as Ivory Coast got comfortably on top of Switzerland, scoring two goals before half-time to set up a comfortable lead. Switzerland pegged one back in the second half but it proved to be only a consolation goal with Ivory Coast going through 2-1. Then, after that, was the clash of the giants. England and Argentina, in the biggest game of the round.

England, however, got off to a very shaky start with the Argentinians scoring in just the sixth minute to strike fear into the heart of the English boss, Stuart Pearce. It seemed that Argentina might have got a bit ahead of themselves, however, because star midfielder Josh Taylor immediately pulled one back for England practically off the kickoff - and from there, the floodgates opened. Argentina were hopelessly beaten all around the ground as England took their football to a new dimension, playing amazing passes around the ground. A 25 year-old striker by the name of Brian Allen scored twice in the space of two minutes and Shantanu Rooney himself scored not long after. When Brian Allen completed his hat-trick on the brink of half-time, England were a staggering 5-1 up. The second half was slightly better for Argentina, until Covvy came on and knocked one into the back of the net. The final score? 6-1.

The next game though saw an even bigger shock, with Germany destroyed at the hands of... Serbia, of all teams. The Serbians led 4-0 at half-time after a hat-trick from Zavisa Petrovic, a 24 year old striker at Inter who has a great international record of 37 goals from 40 games. The Germans pulled one back, but the Serbians scored again to record a massive 5-1 win. What a game for Serbia!

The final game in the second round saw Portugal go through 2-0 at the expense of a lacklustre Cameroon, who failed to get a shot on target throughout the match. And then, on to the finals!

The first match saw holders Brazil taking on Uruguay, who had required penalties to get past a resilient Turkey. Brazil seemed huge favourites, but they fell behind in the twelfth minute and Uruguay managed to hold out for the rest of the match, recording an amazing upset. Brazil had 21 shots to Uruguay's 6, but it was Uruguay taking the 1-0 victory in a brilliant effort. They were through to the semis, and Brazil were gone! After that it was Croatia taking on USA, with both teams in good form. The USA weren't able to recreate their great win over France from the last game, though, and it was Croatia winning a comfortable 3-0 despite a relatively even match.

Portugal were to face another African nation in the likes of Ivory Coast now, after they beat Cameroon 2-0 in the last round. Ivory Coast hadn't had the hardest game in the second round, beating Switzerland 2-1, but they came out the far more motivated team and Portugal were very disappointing. Ivory Coast went up in the 4th minute and added to their lead in the 23rd minute. They scored again late in the second half and despite a consolation goal from Portugal they never looked threatening, with Ivory Coast going through 3-1.

The last game of the quarter finals was England taking on Serbia - both teams had recorded huge wins, and very unexpected ones. The form was flowing, the teams were feeling good - but, after destroying one giant it seemed that Serbia's energy was lost. They looked very poor and after Brian Allen gave the English the lead within the first ten minutes of the game, they soon ran out the match. It was the day of the FM Elimination Challengers, with Shantanu Rooney, Ollie and Covvy all scoring as England romped it in 4-0 to progress to the semis.

The first match would see Uruguay, fresh from taking down Brazil, up against the in-form English who had scored 10 goals in their last two matches. Unfortunately for Uruguay, they couldn't have picked a worse time to take on England who were in amazing form. It was Brian Allen who again gave them an early lead, and they soon made it 2-0. It took until the 80th minute for Uruguay to find the net, making it 2-1, but two quick goals from Covvy and then Kieran Gibbs saw the final score 4-1 to England. The other game was not so exciting - Ivory Coast looked a completely different team to the one that triumphed over Portugal, and the Croatians, who had had a relatively easy draw up until now, qualifying over Tunisia and the Honduras before beating Mexico, the USA and Ivory Coast, would be heading to their first World Cup Final in history.

The third placed playoff was contested between Ivory Coast and Uruguay, and in the end two goals before half-time saw the Ivory Coast finishing comfortable winners in front of a crowd of 80,500 at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. Uruguay had a few shots but none were really threatening and it was a deserved win for the Africans.

In the final, it was England up against Croatia, with the match being played at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California with over 100,000 fans flocking to see the match. After a drab first half though, many English fans feared their team's form had dried up with the scores locked at 0-0 and Croatia looking threatening on a few occasions. However, it was Matthew Warren and then Ollie Holden who scored in the second half, securing a 2-0 win for England in the final as they claimed their first World Cup in 56 years. The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by China.

So, after that conclusive review, it's time to take a look at our two remaining competitors, Ollie and Shantanu. The gap last year between the two players was around 425 points strong. Could Ollie reduce that gap?

Ollie himself couldn't really complain about the past year, as it had gone brilliantly. A World Cup win for himself (and Shantanu, as well) and an excellent year in the Barclays Premier League as City narrowly held on to beat their fierce rivals United by just three points in the race for the league title. Ollie had an excellent World Cup and was equally good for Manchester City, playing 49 games over the year and showing no signs of a loss of form at all with an average rating of 7.54. In fact, it was his second best season in the league in history and with just two players remaining Ollie may have found his form at the right time. It was a good season also in the awards category for Ollie, as he picked up a handful - he was named in the FIFA World Cup Dream Team, as well as being named as the adidas? Golden Ball runner-up with Shantanu Rooney taking out that award. He was named in the Premier League Team of the Week three times as well as being the Player of the Month for December, and he was additionally named in the Barclays Premier League Team of the Season after another excellent year at City. To cap it off, he was named as the English 2022/23 PFA Player of the Year for the first time in his career. The only other competitor to win that award is Covvy, who claimed it in 2019/20. So, it was a great year for Ollie, but has he managed to catch the freak that is Shantanu at all?

Yes, he is, it turned out, with the gap shortening by around 50 points for the first time in a long time. Shantanu Rooney hardly dropped off the pace and won't be too worried by the shortening of the gap, but he might have to open his eyes now. Still, he had an excellent season as well by winning the adidas? Golden Ball in the World Cup and he ended up making 48 appearances for Real Madrid as well in La Liga. He didn't show any signs of losing form, scoring 38 goals in those matches, but he will want to keep playing and hope that Real Madrid don't lose faith as he starts to decline. It was an excellent season for Real Madrid though as they fell only two points short of the 100 mark and that was definitely due to Shantanu, who scored 30 times in 35 matches in the league. However, he is starting to lose some of his pace which is absolutely critical for a fast striker like his. It isn't quite as important for a midfielder, but Shantanu will need to hope that he can keep on playing first-team football for quite some time. With that said, the gap is still very big and Shantanu needs only to survive four more years and the title will be his.

Well, that just about sums up this update! Let's take a look at some of the stats and leaderboards.
