The ICC09 Experiment: Youth Forward

WIth regards to different formats, I believe that there are separate values for a number of different variables, within batting, there seems to be a second aggressive trait, as some players who are 'normal aggression' seem to score faster than some on 'very aggressive'. As you mentioned there would probably be another factor that alters the player's skill at a particular form of the game. What the editor does do though is edit the basic batting skill. I think that if there are different statistics for different variables they edit this basic batting value.

Likewise with bowling there will be a number of different variables, in particular accuracy/aggression/economy rate. Some bowlers that are highly rated are extremely expensive despite taking wickets. Also, there wouldn't be a need for technique training in these different areas for bowlers if there weren't variables representing them.

On a side note, the form box in the editor doesn't do anything, it changes what you see in the game, but as form is based on previous performances in comparison to the player's skill level, it will revert to their form before you edited it. This means that you can't test the effect different form levels have on a player.

I've done a little test with 8 batsmen

Mid-order

Slight Spin, Leg, back foot preferences, defensive
Skill level: 1000

Uncapped.

I then trained 4 with fast bowling technique, 4 with general technique, and played 2 of each of those in the 1st team, 2 of each in the second.

The gains in ability over 1 season were:

Fast Gen
1st 8 15
1st 22 7
2nd 18 7
2nd 19 23

So second team total improvement was 67, first team was 52. Similarly for Fast technique/General Technique coaching.

None of the players' preferences changed.

A ninth player who wasn't coached at all gained 12 points in skill.

None of the differences are statistically significant, so I think we need further copies of the test to get something from it definitive, but that specific coaching/staying in the second XI are more effective would be very good information to have.

Also - has anybody found something that leads them to believe there are separate values for batsmen in One Day matches? One of the tips from the menu states that some players may be better in one dayers than first class - however, the only thing I could see that would help this would be the batting preferences - very aggressive or aggressive.

The tip means that you should play aggressive batsman instead of defensive batsman. That is all I know. I don't think there are different values for FC and OD.
