Australia Announce Their Playing XI

Australia have announced their playing XI for the Pacific Charity match which will be played in a couple of days' time. There are a couple of notable omissions, such as the Twenty20 specialist pacemen Shaun Tait and Dirk Nannes who have 28 T20 International wickets each. In alphabetical order, the squad announced by Cricket Australia is:

Brad Haddin - Wicketkeeper
John Hastings
James Hopes
David Hussey
Mike Hussey
Mitchell Johnson
Usman Khawaja
Steve O'Keefe
David Warner
Shane Watson
Cameron White - Captain

Watch Out For
David Warner - Fresh on the back of back-to-back tons for New South Wales, he scores his runs at 9 an over.
Shane Watson - A key member of both the batting and bowling unit, Watson will play a big part in the game.
Mike Hussey - The finisher. If there's a tight run chase, you can almost guarantee that Mr. Cricket will chase it down.

Under Pressure

John Hastings - Nobody knows why he's selected over Dan Christian, but this match gives Hastings an impromptu chance to show his worth.
Usman Khawaja - He's on T20I debut, and his domestic record - 119 runs at 19 - is nothing to write home about.

New Zealand Team Announced

After much speculation, New Zealand have released their playing XI for the Pacific Water Relief match. Notable omissions included death bowlers Tim Southee and Kyle Mills, who declared themselves unavailable, and Nathan McCullum who was dropped. The Kiwi team certainly look like second favourites, and lack the star quality that is so abundant for their Trans-Tasman rivals. Their XI, in alphabetical order, is:

Dean Brownlie
James Franklin
Brendan McCullum - Keeper
Stephen Murdoch
Jacob Oram
Jesse Ryder
Ross Taylor - Captain
Daryl Tuffey
Daniel Vettori
Neil Wagner
Kane Williamson

Watch out for
Brendan McCullum - The brash, ballsy and big hitting wicket keeper will be setting the tone at the top of the order.
Jesse Ryder - A throwback, this heavy drinking and heavy hitting all rounder will be important with the bat and possibly the ball.
Daniel Vettori - A member of the national team since he was in school, Daniel Vettori has a keen cricket brain.

Under Pressure
Dean Brownlie - His international record is less than modest, but Brownlie has all the talent in the world.
Stephen Murdoch - Who is this guy? Seriously - has anyone actually heard of him? Where's Stephen Lynch when you need him?

Good start to the story. I like the plot as well. Browline as you said has a lot of talent and will have to send a strong message to the selectors as well. Good to see young talent being injected in the squad.

Spoils Even Early On

Australian captain Cameron White won the toss and chose to bat first on just about the flattest pitch you could ever wish to encounter. It was clear that the toss was going to be vital, but New Zealand hit back straight away when from the very first ball of the innings Shane Watson was run out for a diamond duck - 0 off 0.

Shane Watson - run out - 0 (0)

Usman Khawaja was under a lot of pressure not only as a debutant, but also coming out to bat with his team on 0/1. He batted well scoring mainly with drives and front-foot flicks, but was out to a catch in a million from Ross Taylor at slip who lept like a salmon to grab onto an upper-cut that was destined for the boundary.

Usman Khawaja - c. Taylor b. Franklin - 14 (10)

David Warner and Cameron white laid waste to the Kiwi bowlers, forming a dynamic and aggressive partnership. Warner was looking dangerous and White creating carnage when out of the blue, Jacob Oram - who had until that point bowled 2.5 unimpressive overs for 31 runs - clung onto a stinging drive from Warner to finish the fifth over with a bang.

David Warner - c. and b. Oram - 26 (17)

Ross Taylor ecstatic after taking the catch of a lifetime; David Warner belted five brutal boundaries; Oram got his man at the end of the fifth over.

Australia 50/3
5 overs
