The Reintegration Thread

I somehow liked the Vaughn, flintoff, lead eng sides better than cook even though they won a lot under him.

Maybe ECB should realize problem is with their poster boy and get KP back or atleast change captain, Cook is a very good batsman, not so much as captain despite those early results.

I think besides results, to be a great and MEMORABLE captain you need to have some sort of a defining trait. All the great/good captains had that flair to back up their results - some examples that come to mind - Steve Waugh was revolutionary, Smith had a solid persona, Dhoni has his cool-tag, Flintoff was high on flair, etc etc. This guys made their presence felt on the field in one way or another

Cook comes across as a batsman who is also captaining the side, and has a very dull personality. Maybe he has results, but he wont be a memorable captain unless some miracle happens

Cook has been a poor a captain. there's no arguing that.

But Warne went after him early on armed with little more than an agenda and cook's cautious batting style. At the start of the home ashes warne had it out for cook. when really there was little evidence for that. a series win in India. A shambolic 3 test series draw in NZ where there were 1st innings scores of 170 and 204 and when scoring >400 too much play was lost to force a win.

that was followed by a relatively routine 2-0 home win V NZ from two tests. (winning a match despite never scoring 300 in an innings implies adequate captaincy, at the very least)

There isn't really much evidence there to criticise cook's captaincy. England winning a series in India is absolutely huge and seems to have been largely ignored. Shambolic batting at times and not being in any position to really do anything a lot of the time but forcing through wins when in good positions.

So Warne then went into the ashes going after cook before they had even started. his captaincy since day 1 of the ashes last summer has been terrible, for sure. While Warne knows a lot about cricket but this wasn't some sort of genius insight. This is Warne criticising someone based on his opinion of him and the fact it suits Warne personal agenda to do so. Warne may well have believe Cook would have been a bad captain, but that wasn't based on anything Cook had done as captain and was completely unjustified at the time (although seems pretty fair now)

So Cook has a point, but let's get real. You're in a high profile job that is always going to draw more criticism than is fair when things go badly. You have to stand up to it and try and prove them wrong. Coming out and saying things like this looks weak and is very poor. Regardless of whether he has a point or not. England's biggest problem has been scoring >400 very rarely. the top and middle order completely failing time and time again isn't really a captaincy issue.

Cook has such a weak image as captain, he isn't the 1st captain to be criticized regularly by a high profile former player.

As i mentioned before, whenever the laws allows both KP & Cook & ECB to talk, thus revealing the 100% truth as to who was right.

At that stage it will be layed bare in front of us fans whether we can Cook in the team as leader or KP back & leading. Cause what is obvious, both of them can't stay in the same XI.

I don't see why. He didn't realise they could be heard. As the article says, in the UK there was an ad break, but he didn't realise that there wasn't one in Australia and so the mics were still live.

A few years ago, Dean Jones didn't realize he was on air when he called Amla a terrorist in a funny manner according to him & was banned from commentating on a certain network.

not even remotely equitable. Might as well have brought up the Ron Atkinson "gaffe"

When will people learn that when you are near a mic; don't say anything that you wouldn't want to be heard over the air even if you think that it is off or you are at an ad break or whatever. Like feel free to chat during the ad breaks to the other people in the box; but don't say something that would upset or anger people if it was heard on the air. He should be spoken to at least by Sky; I don't think that he'll be commentating on the first test...

Yes its not equitable, but given the obvious situation with KP - in which Strauss role is well known, he can't get away with saying that. Doesn't sit well in the current feeling on constant disrespect by the ECB or anti KP fellas in the media have been perpetuating this year.

I'll be interested to see what the ENG cricket media reaction is to this. Cause I'm sure if it was KP had disrespected anyone publicly since, their would be serious vitriol being leveled against him already.

Highly doubt Strauss will get fired. Mildly reprimanded more like

what is worse about this Strauss situation is that, for all this talk of reconciliation, Strauss clearly isn't over KP, it's like a bad break up lol

He swore, I agree it's regrettable because it was broadcast, but beyond that, who cares? It's happened many times before and it will happen many times again. It's a major over reaction to ask for him to be fired. People swear, things happen. Not an issue.

And I'm sure KP has similar feelings towards Strauss, as the South African team will tell you. :D

Jones made that generalisation because Amla is a Muslim and has a big beard. Strauss made his comment at that one single individual based on a raft of evidence.

It is regrettable, but by no means a sackable offence.
