The State of Brazilian football en route & after 2014 World Cup

Marcelo doesn't overlap a lot?:rolleyes

I wonder if Felipao will consider three at the back like in his last World Cup.

Something like:

Cesar
Silva Luiz Dante
Alves Ramires Gustavo Marcelo
Oscar
Hulk Neymar

Would be interesting.

Ye that 3 at the back formation is a must for Big Phil to try one would think. Would probably have Sandro over Gustavo & maybe Dede over Luiz too. Everytime i see him at Chelsea playing in defense he looks woeful. Far better in mid-field IMO.

I was thinking he would replicate Edmilson's role in 2002, playing as the sweeper who steps into midfield with the ball.

Silva fits that role quite well more than Luiz.

Whether it's Silva or Luiz sweeping, a back-three of them two and Dante is still stronger than the 2002 side's defence.

A back three would also free up Alves and Marcelo, both of whom I'd have reservations if they were both part of a back four. Filipe Luis would offer a more rounded and reliable alternative on the left side if needed.

True. Will be interesting to see if the back-3 formation is employed tonight versus Italy.

I think he means in general since Ronaldinho's looked good in Brazil while Kaka's been warming the bench.

2013 Confederations Cup -- Brazil fields young squad - ESPN FC

I'm very surprised players like Ramires, Fernandinho (man city), Willian (anzi makhachkala), Felipe Santana (b dortmund) and Dede (Cruzeiro) is not in Brazil confederations cup squad. Since Scolari has returned i think he has also missed a trick by not playing a back 3 formation as the case was when Brazil won the 2002 world cup. Full-backs Alves & Marcelo in my view should be allowed more freedom to fly forward the same way Roberto Carlos & Cafu did in the 2002 team. He should also not play David Luiz as a defender, at chelsea clearly his best position is in mid-field.

Best Brazil starting XI & squad if all are fit in my view is - 3-5-1-1 formation:

-------------------------------Julio Cesar----------------

---------Dede---------------Thiago Silva------------Dante-------------------

Alves--------Ramirez-------David Luiz--------Hernanes-----------Marcelo

-----------------------------Neymar----------------------------------

-----------------------------Hulk or Fred-------------------------------

Subs: Jefferson, Diego Cavelleri, Rafael, Luis Felipe, Felipe Santana, Luiz Gustavo, Sandro or Paulinho, Oscar, Lucas Moura, Fred or Hulk, Fernandinho or Willian, Leandro Damiao
