Third Largest Sporting Event ??

If India is out of the tournament earlier, please take that 1 billion out of the calculations.

The RWC is about the same in terms of teams participating but I still feel the CWC is more popular than RWC mainly because of the global audience. The RWC will undoubtedly draw bigger crowds because of the larger stadiums but the global TV audience will be significantly lower than the CWC. CWC there is a billion plus while RWC has probably guessing around 600-700 million+. Also Rugby is more of a secondary sport in most nations, the only nations where Rugby is a national sport are NZ, Fiji and Samoa where these countries are small in population while cricket has a number of nations where cricket is the national sport such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Australia, South Africa and these countries have population far greater than that of the rugby nations mentioned above.

The RWC may have bigger stadiums, but it doesn't say much for the CWC when apart from the opening game there hasn't been a ground sold out. This is the World Cup, yet people aren't watching, I'm sure this won't be the case with the RWC.

Tue but compare the population of France (a developed country) to the countries in the Carribean, it will easily be more than 10 fold and the national income Carribean nations are substantially lower than France. From what I gather the major deterrence by people in the Carribean have been the ticket prices, they have warmed up to the event but ticket prices are too much for their liking and I can understand that because of the greedy intentions of the ICC.

the thing is the time length of cricket is much longer than that of rugby or any other team sports, since most of the matches in the first round of the wc are mostly with minnows it makes sense that it isn't packed, who wants to watch a game that is already one sided for 7 hours, not me.I think the twenty20 championship later this year in south africa will be interesting in that regard.

is there any links that says the cw is the 3rd largest event? or if not can any one give me the name of the paper and the page no where it said it. Cause I need the source. Also I have been hearing cricket's the second most popular sport but is there actually any link/source to prove that? If anyone can help me out here, it would be great.

Third largest sporting event,..??? You must be kidding, The outside world must laugh when they see a World Cup with empty stadiums. The ICC really have messed this event up, they couldn't organise a p155 up in a brewery. With the restrictions at the grounds etc, such a dissappointment. As much as I like cricket, it really is a non-event at the moment. The ICC should start to try and get non Asian sponsors, looked at the Hero Honda website, oh dear those bikes look about 20-30 years old, great image for cricket isn't it? Aren't there any modern western sponsors available?
