This is how India became no.1 in current test ranking

I think India will manage the retirements better. Even with the famous trio around, we dont actually look the best in the business (there are teams that are competing with us and probably better). What irritates me is that we dont give the opportunities to the right people. And it doesnt help that our captain has a few favorites that he wants to give chances to (a certain 'King of T20' who gets chances in tests when better guys are out there waiting).

That shows the transition which India have come through, they struggled very badly overseas when they first came in! But now they have set up a fortress at home, although the pitches are normally roads! And they have improved their away records with teams. I mean a country with over a billion, should surely be able to produce 11 quality cricketers.

Wasn't their home already a fortress? Although I guess I only remember our matches played there where we lost in 01 and it took a hell of alot of playing to win in 04. Agree about the away thing though, they are starting to perform more consistently away from home. Wouldn't mind seeing how they go in SA and England as its been awhile.

We won in England last time we were there. SA and Australia are the two places that we have to win and thats the big challenge.

Home used to be a fortress for us, but in the past few years teams have found ways to beat us at home (Australia beat us in 2004, SA beat us in 2000 and also levelled a series inbetween, England levelled a series too with Flintoff as captain). Home has become little shaky for us. Also we have started preparing pitches that are easier for the opposition than before from the 80's or 90's when our tracks used to be nightmare for those who are not that good against spin.

We've been doin very well overseas, something which wasn't our strength years back. Way to go team :)

Even I am waiting eagerly for the India-South Africa Test series of next year. What a tour it will be! Two equally poised teams battling for the top position; really can't wait for those matches!

It would also be interesting to see how we cope up after the retirement of some monumental figures of our batting. The remaining three of the once amazing Fab Four would probably play for three more years, at the very best. After that, a huge hole would be created in our batting. Yeah, we do have some good prospects in our first-class level who might just be their ideal replacements, but it all depends on how we utilize them. Some real tough times coming ahead for us.

lets see who retain top position, ind v/s sa tests are finalized

^^^ Thats good news, pal. Its going to be a very closely fought Test Series

the ranking confusing.
Pakistan played like 21 games and then campare that to teams like England who played 39:confused:.

Even in ODI because look at South Africa and then look at India matchs
the Rankings is a joke

India is definately a good side but i dont think they are as best Australia were 2 or 3 years ago when they were on the top spot

No one ever said this. India are not even consistent to retain their #1 spot so remaining consistent for 2-3 years is very difficult for them.

there is no question about that.

that side had an incredibly strong batting line up and had two of the best bowlers in the world.

They have looked the best side in the world over the last 12 months. I'd have to concede that. They came through very well against england and new zealand and despite the flat pitches had the players to pile on the pressure against sri lanka.

SA still look to have the same problems as they always did in that they are able to dig themselves into holes and australia, sri lanka and england (I think after an ashes win and that they have played well against SA and India away we can put them up there) just look to lack a little bit of the pure quality that some of india's players have.

India will never ever be the same like how Australia were sometime back. But its good for the game that no team can ever be like how West Indies and Australia dominated the game. It created such a huge gap between the nations, and now the competition gets better. Some teams mentally lost to Australia and West Indies before they took the field. Now its far better!

Yeah that thing created a very interesting battle between some of the good teams of the world. At the momnet i dont think that any team can retain his spot becasue most of the teams are pretty equal balanced and if some teams are not equal to others then they are not very far form them

Well India is just best amongst worst at the moment. No team in world at the moment can stake claim to be no.1. Not even Saffers. They have been woeful for some time now since beating Aussies in Australia.

Poms look better to me than Indians.
