Monday 8th April

We had an hour and a half till the end of play and we had built up a lead of 184 runs. It had been excellent work by us. We were still setting ourselves small milestones to achieve. Our next one, as a pair, was to reach the 150 partnership. I was trying to go for my century and Andy was going for his half-century. I was still playing some agressive shots but Andy decided that he wanted to join the party and really started to smash the ball to all the corners of the ground. We left Spearman and his men a bit of a headache. They could just not stop us. We soon built up such a lead that we passed 200 runs :happy It was a great moment for us as we felt sure that with the way the Gloucestershire batting line-up looked this would easily be enough.

We eventually had a lead of 212 runs and were 189/6. Andy had begun to lose focus and had just been dropped by Kirby in the deep. We had a little chat,

"Ok mate. We've got about an hour to go now. I think we should just reign it in slightly and just make sure we make it till the end of the day unscathed. What do you think?"

"That sounds like a good idea Tom. Just keep it on the ground from now on."

Very next ball, Andy was out  Pretty ironic. A slower ball completely deceived him. He tried to flick it of the pads but did not quiet pick it up and it went slightly airbourne. The fielder at square-leg threw himself forward and took a simply stunning catch. I could not believe it and neither could Andy. It was very cruel as he had almost made his half-century. He ended up six runs short. Gloucestershire had made the breakthrough and I was now batting with the tail.

Andy doesn't quiet reach his 50 :happy (Animated) :happy

Jimmy was the new batsman. Tactics had to change now. I could not rely on the tail to hang around with me and I really wanted to make my maiden ton. It was time to go out all guns blazing. With retrospect this was probably not the best tactic. Both Jimmy and Cooky could bat and I am sure either one of them could have made it till the end of the day. My agressive tactic only got me an extra 4 runs, before I mis-judged an off-cutter from Sillence and tried to cover drive it. It came of the splice of the bat and flew straight to Windows.

"NOOOOO WAYYYY! WHY DID I DO THAT?"

I was so gutted :( I was only 14 runs away from my maiden ton and I had thrown my wicket away. I was pretty annoyed. However I cheered up when I got a standing innovation from the crowd and saw David giving me the thumbs up. It was my best ever score and myself and Andy had dragged Kent to a decent score. We were now 192/7 and had a lead of 215 runs.

Everyone was now back upstairs on the pavillion with the police having finished their work. I slowly took of my pads. It had been hard work out there, I had faced 110 balls and had been concentrating so hard to guard my wicket. I was physically and mentally exhausted. I made my way upstairs. Everyone congratulated me on my great knock and said how unlucky it was that I had not made a 100. Andy was already there drinking a glass of South African wine. How dignified :p Dave came over and shook my hand,

"Well done Tom, excellent knock. I can see you are going to make a big impact at Kent. You have so much potential, don't waste it. And one of those ways you can waste it is by hanging around Cooky too much. He has issues which he needs to sort out. Don't let him drag you down."

"Sure skip, but Cooky is my mate and I've got to look out for my mates."

"I understand that. But there is looking out for your mates and there is sheer stupidity. Make sure you can distinguish between the two."

Well that had been interesting. Obviously Dave did not appreciate me hanging out with Cooky. I would have to think about how we went from here.

Things for Kent did not go to well either. The tail did not really hang around with them only adding an extra 18 runs. By the time they finished it was the close of play. Not a bad total and with a decent lead we would be looking for victory. Hopefully the weather would continue to hold out.

As Amjad made his way back into the dressing room we all began to get dressed into our trackies and prepared to warm down. I was dead on my feet but this was especially important for me otherwise I could end up getting serious muscle strain. We all jogged outside. We performed numerous stretches and finished with a lap of the pitch before heading back into the changing room. Some of the guys had a quick shower while the rest of us got our kit together. There was a lot of banter going around :p I was thinking about today's performance. I had made a good score and had been involved in a massive partnership. I was pretty pleased with myself and decided that maybe I did have a very bright future ahead of me :)

Eventually everyone was finally ready. We hopped onto our waiting coach where even our driver, Ramzz, a passionate Kent fan ;) congratulated me on a fine knock. I had barely touched the seat before I was sound asleep. It had been a hard day's work but I had learnt lot's from it. Tomorrow would be an exciting day.

Nice update Tom. Sad that you didn't get to a ton. Decent lead you got now. Just bowl well and this game should be yours;)

Unlucky on reaching 84 - should really have been a 100 but never mind! Great update as always! KUTGW! :)
