New Journalist Signed By Cricket Australia

Monday, 12th December

Cricket Australia today announced their signing of young Victorian journalist Tim Barnes. Tim, aged just 14 will write for Cricket Australia's website on the forthcoming Big Bash League as well as the test cricket that follows. Tim was reported to have heard the news of his signing while listening to Melbourne sports station, 1116 SEN.

Tim, an avid cricket fan plays for his local club the mighty North Bungwyn Bulls. He is reported to be a budding young journalist and a student of the game. Cricket Australia CEO, James Sutherland was proud to announce that Tim would head up the CA's media team in the 2012 season.

"After reading summaries of his local club's matches, I flabbergasted to hear that they were written by a 14 year old," Sutherland said when interviewed on Network 10's "The Project" today.
"He is a very talented young writer who has a bright future in the media industry," the CA boss continued.
"I am confident he will provide detailed, insightful summaries of this summer's action."

When interviewed by Cricket Australia, Tim came across as an exuberant, energetic young man.
"I am extremely exited by this opportunity," Tim said.
"My family has been very supportive of my writing career so far. I would like to thank them for being such a tremendous help," He added.
When asked about his own cricketing prowess, he told the media that he hadn't given up hope on wicket keeping for Australia.

Both on and off the field, this summer is shaping up to absolutely massive. Cricket Australia will provide a comprehensive media coverage of the cricket and Tim is going to be a huge asset to their team.

Vetrans To Struggle In Big Bash

Tuesday, 13th December

Former Australian spin duo, Stuart MacGill and Shane Warne have recently signed with Big Bash League franchises, but are they only there for corporate dollars? Shane Warne is sure to bring thousands through the gates for the Melbourne Stars, however he may struggle to bamboozle batsmen the way he did in his prime. Warne and new partner, Liz Hurley will be the face of the Melbourne franchise, but the great leggie's form may not warrant his selection.

Upon signing with the Stars, Warne indicated that he wanted to play all 7 games. Thinking back to Shane's playing days I recall that he wasn't the fittest specimen around. Even after losing a lot of weight, he may not have the required stamina to endure a game of Twenty20 cricket. Warne has always disliked fielding. His signature IPL move was to bowl his allocated overs, then take himself off and captain from the boundary. I can hardly imagine a 43 year old Shane Warne sprinting around the boundary of the MCG. If he wants to make a successful comeback, Warne will have to put in some serious work on the training track.

Stuart MacGill was dropped from the Australian test squad in the early 2000s due to lack of fitness. The ACB essentially told him that he was fat. At the age of 40, it is highly unlikely that MacGill's fitness levels have improved. Twenty20 cricket is a very physically demanding game, so it is unlikely that the Sydney Sixers will play someone who is unfit.

Former Australia chinaman bowler, Brad Hogg, will suit up for the Scorchers this summer. He will be competing for a spot in the side with younger spinners like Michael Beer. Playing multiple spinners in Twenty20 cricket can be very risky. He will need to bowl exceptionally well to hold the younger generation at bay.

The Big Bash franchises will definitely have some big calls to make this summer. These former greats are certain to draw huge crowds to game, but if they are detrimental to the side, surely it isn't worth playing them.

Tim Compares Big Bash Franchises: Part 1

Wednesday, 14th December

In just 2 days the inaugural Twenty20 Big Bash League will get underway. The 8 franchises have all fought hard to contract the best possible players. Here's how the squads compare.

Adelaide Strikers
Michael Klinger (c)
Aiden Blizzard
Cameron Borgas
Johan Botha
Lee Carseldine
Tom Cooper
Adam Crosthwaite
Theo Doropoulos
Brendan Drew
Callum Ferguson
Daniel Harris
Nathan Lyon
Bryce McGain
James Muirhead
Aaron O?Brien
Kieron Pollard
Gary Putland
Kane Richardson
Alfonso Thomas

The South Australian Redbacks, winners of last summer's Big Bash, were the base for the Striker's squad. They have signed a team full of South Australian talent. Michael Klinger and Aiden Blizzard will provide the Strikers with a solid opening partnership. Tom Cooper and Callum Ferguson are both quality middle order batsman and are expected to score heavily throughout the tournament. Former Victorian wicket-keeper, Adam Crosthwaite will be solid behind the stumps and will provide much needed lower order power. The Strikers have strong spin stocks with Nathan Lyon, Johan Botha and Bryce McGain signed to the franchise. The only thing they lack is quality pace bowlers.

Brisbane Heat
James Hopes (c)
Ryan Broad
Nick Buchanan
Dan Christian
Ben Cutting
Peter Forrest
Matthew Gale
Chris Hartley
Ryan Harris
Nathan Hauritz
Matthew Hayden
Chris Lynn
Brendon McCullum
Michael Neser
Steve Paulsen
Andrew Robinson
Chris Swan
Daniel Vettori

The Brisbane Heat have signed a very strong team with plenty of local talent. Brendon McCullum and Matthew Hayden will provide plenty of big hitting at the top of the order. James Hopes, Dan Vettori and Dan Christian will be instrumental with both bat and ball. Ryan Harris and Ben Cutting deliver a formidable new ball attack and Nathan Hauritz is a quality spin bowler. On paper, the Heat look to be a very strong side. If middle order batsman, Chris Lynn, Chris Hartley and Peter Forrest fire, Brisbane could be unstoppable.

Hobart Hurricanes
Tim Paine (c)
Travis Birt
Mark Cosgrove
Xavier Doherty
Luke Feldman
Evan Gulbis
Ben Hilfenhaus
Michael Hogan
Phil Jaques
Matt Johnston
Jason Krejza
Nick Kruger
Ben Laughlin
Rhett Lockyear
Rana Naveed
Ricky Ponting
Owais Shah
Jonathan Wells

With their captain and wicket-keeper, Tim Paine, injured indefinitely the Hurricanes are significantly weakened. Crowd favourite, Rana Naveed will head the Hobart new ball attack along side Ben Hilfenhaus and Ben Laughlin. Xavier Doherty and Jason Krejza strengthen the spin department and Matt Johnston is likely to replace Paine behind the stumps. The Hurricanes main strength however, is their batting. Birt, Cosgrove, Gulbis, Jacques, Kruger, Ponting and Shah are all world class batsman. The Hurricanes are the dark horse. If everything goes right, the Hurricanes are serious challengers for the trophy.

Perth Scorchers
Marcus North (c)
Tom Beaton
Michael Beer
Mark Cameron
Paul Collingwood
Nathan Coulter-Nile
Liam Davis
Ben Edmondson
Herschelle Gibbs
Brad Hogg
Mike Hussey
Mitchel Johnson
Simon Katich
Mitchell Marsh
Shaun Marsh
Luke Pomersbach
Nathan Rimmington
Luke Ronchi

The Perth Scorchers are definitely the team to beat in Big Bash League 2011. With proven international batsmen Herschelle Gibbs, Shaun Marsh, Simon Katich, Marcus North, Luke Pomersbach and Mike Hussey, Perth have probably the best batting lineup in the competition. Paul Collingwood, Mitchell Marsh and Brad Hogg are all quality all rounders, capable of wreaking havoc with both bat and ball. Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Rimington and Mark Cameron are all superb fast bowlers. Perth look to have assembled the perfect Twenty20 squad.

Shane Harwood
Aaron Heal
Jayde Herrick
Brad Hodge
Michael Hill
Brenton McDonald
Graham Manou
Glenn Maxwell
Dirk Nannes
Abdul Razzaq
Nathan Reardon
Will Sheridan
Shaun Tait

The Etihad Stadium based Renegades are probably the weaker of the two Melbourne sides. They have great depth in their fast bowling stocks with Shaun Tait and Dirk Nannes set to lead the attack. Andrew McDonald and Shahid Afridi are quality allrounders who both have plenty of twenty20 experience. Brad Hodge and Aaron Finch are sure to provide quick top order runs. Youngster, Glenn Maxwell is a very talented allrounder and will most likely be an integral part of the Renegades campaign. Former South Australian, Graham Manou is set to take his place behind the stumps. The Renegades are likely to finish mid table in the upcoming Big Bash League.

Melbourne Stars
Cameron White (c)
George Bailey
Jackson Bird

James Faulkner
John Hastings
Jon Holland
David Hussey
Alex Keath
Clint McKay
James Pattinson
Robert Quiney
Peter Siddle
Chris Simpson
Adam Voges
Matthew Wade
Shane Warne
Luke Wright

Led by out of form allrounder, Cameron White, the Stars have put together a hugely competitive side. They have a formidable new ball attack with Peter Siddle, James Pattinson, Clint McKay and Jade Dernbach all contracted. Shane Warne and Jon Holland will provide the highest quality spin bowling in the league. They bat very deep with Adam Voges, Luke Wright, James Faulkner and Alex Keath all expected to provide lower order runs. Both the batting and bowling of David Hussey will be hugely important for the Stars. The Melbourne based franchise is expected to be in finals contention.

Sydney Sixers
Brad Haddin (c)
Dwayne Bravo
Ed Cowan
Patrick Cummins
Josh Hazlewood
Moises Henriques
Brett Lee
Michael Lumb
Nic Maddinson
Stuart MacGill
Ian Moran
Peter Nevill
Stephen O?Keefe
Ben Rohrer
Steven Smith
Mitchell Starc
Dominic Thornely
Shane Watson

The Sydney Sixers have built a solid squad, full of twenty20 specialists. Michael Lumb, Dwayne Bravo, Moises Henriques and Steven Smith all provide plenty of twenty20 experience. They have quality fast bowlers in Brett Lee, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitch Starc as well as hard hitters, Watson, Rohrer and Haddin. Former test player, Stuart MacGill will provide reliable leg spin.

Sydney Thunder
David Warner (c)
Sean Abbott
Tim Armstrong
Nic Bills
Doug Bollinger
Luke Butterworth
Scott Coyte
Tim Cruickshank
Matthew Day
Luke Doran
Ben Dunk
Fidel Edwards
Jason Floros
Chris Gayle
Phillip Hughes
Usman Khawaja
Craig Philipson
Daniel Smith

The Thunder's opening partnership of Warner and Gayle is set to excite fans throughout the Summer. Both players are highly capable hitters and are often regarded as twenty20 specialists. Usman Khawaja, Craig Philipson and Phil Hughes are also competent batsmen. Doug Bollinger and Fidel Edwards will provide a fiery new ball attack. Dan Smith and Ben Dunk are both quality wicket keeper and are expected to compete for places behind the stumps. The Thunder have a superb side and are likely to play finals.

Who will win? Perth Scorchers
Who wil get player of the tournament? David Warner

Birt, Cosgrove, Gulbis, Jacques, Kruger, Ponting and Shah are all world class batsman.

Hmm, Gulbis a world class batsman? :p

He's played 2 FC matches for 4 ducks! Averaging 25 in 7 List A matches and only played 2 T20s :p

Edit: And apart from a 4/8 with the ball in a OD match, he hasn't done much at all.

BBL Gets Underway

Friday, 16th December

Sydney Sixers v Brisbane Heat @ SCG
Brisbane 3-157 (P Forrest 71*, M Hayden 42) defeated Sydney 9-138 (D Bravo 39, B Cutting 3/18) by 19 runs

The inaugural Big Bash League got underway tonight in emphatic style. The Sydney Cricket Ground was a buzz with activity all night. Pink and gold fireworks were a common sight throughout the night. 13 boundaries were belted to the rope and wickets fell at regular intervals.

Peter Forrest was the star of the show with a superb 53 ball 71 not out. Together with Matty Hayden he led the Heat to a competitive 3-157 off their 20 overs. For the Sixers, Brett Lee was the pick of the bowlers. Binga delivered brilliant figures of 2/26 off his 4 overs. The veteran, Stuart MacGill was the most expensive of the bowlers, leaking 34 runs off his allotted overs.

A fantastic restrictive bowling display from the Heat was eventually too much for the Sixers. Each of the Brisbane bowlers produced a wicket as the Heat went on to win by 19 runs. Ben Cutting (3/18) and Dan Christian (2/14) were the stand outs as Sydney slumped to 9-138 off 20 overs. Dwaye Bravo (39) was the sole performer with the bat for sydney.

After an enthralling Big Bash opener, Peter Forrest was unsurprisingly awarded the Man of the Match Award.
