Is fielding that much necessary for a keeper?
I would take that advice and give him some fielding training.

Yea, the three main things that contribute to keeping summary are keeping, technique and fielding

Fielding is also of importance to your wicketkeeper, although not as important as his keeping skill.

His keeping skill must affect how he performs behind the stumps more than fielding. Good fielding on a keeper probably means he'll do better still.

well you can get away with a fielder having horrible fielding but you can't really get away with a keeper having horrible fielding. So you'd want your keeper to have probably reasonable fielding at the minimum for anyone above 23.
