Captains really have to stay in the mid-field unless they want their head on the rack, especially since the ICC started cracking down on slow over rate. As a captain you need to be in the thick of things--be able to talk to your bowler if they are getting a hiding. This is why Ganguly, one of the worst fielders in our team, still fields at mid-on/mid-wicket and lets run flow through his fingers like water in a sieve.
