There's a difference between lager/cider and real ale (our "warm beer"). Though quite what a 15-year old Aussie knows about beer, who knows.

Been a while since I've had real ale. Closest I can get is bottled up Spitfire from Morrisons, but it isn't the same as coming from behind the bar

Spitfire is pretty rough imo. Old Peculier, Doom Bar, BlackSheep and Brakspear are up there as the best.

Old Peculier is a Yorkshire based ale (from the Theakston brewery, who do many other decent brews), if you get the chance to try it on tap, do it. I had it in Bradford a couple of years back, best pint ever. Pretty decent bottled, aswell.
