Stuttgart and Bayern battle for top spot

Wednesday 5 October 2005

Claudio Ranieri faces his toughest test yet when his Stuttgart side host defending Bundesliga champions Bayern M?nchen at the Gottlieb-Daimler stadion.

Stuttgart moved upto third place in the table during the weekend after beating Arminia Bielefeld 1-0. Bayern M?nchen on the other hand drew their game with HSV Hamburg 2-2, and are currently fourth in the table, and a point behind Stuttgart. A win for either side could see them going top.

Although Bayern are still unbeaten in the Bundesliga, Felix Magath believes his team has dropped too many points already from the drawn games and must come away from Stuttgart with a win.

"On most days we would settle for a draw against Stuttgart, but because we have already drawn three games out of six, a win here is very much necessary. Also since Stuttgart are higher than us in the table this game takes the shape of a six pointer, making it all the more important for us to win," said Magath.

Stuttgart manager Claudio Ranieri on the other hand has played down the 'championship-decider' hype surrounding this game, saying its still too early in the season to be making predictions like that.

"I am looking at this game just as I did for the previous ones. Ofcourse both teams will want to win and go top of the table, but there is still a long way to go in the season, and teams can easily bounce back or stumble down during that period. To say that the season depends on this game is a bit premature," claimed Ranieri.

Owen Hargreaves' presence in midfield is crucial for Bayern

Stuttgart are without striker Cacau for this game after the Brazilian suffered a torn calf muscle during the 1-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld, and the availability of Fernando Meira also seems doubtful. Marco Streller or Mario Gomez is tipped to partner Jon Dahl Tomasson in the absence of Cacau.

Jens Jeremies and Philipp Lahm are not available for Bayern M?nchen, and Felix Magath is expected to play Owen Hargreaves in the defensive midfield position and Bixente Lizarazu at left back. Owen Hargreaves' presence in midfield could be the crucial for the the visitors.

Odds from Totalbet.com:
Stuttgart win 3/2
Draw 3/2
Bayern win Evens

i believe this is a huge match in the context of the season. if you can get one up over bayern here youll go a long way to a strong showing this season

Pretty close contest, added it's a battle for top spot and it should be a great match.

Yeah! The match of the season till date. Pity that Stuttgart has to go in without their star striker!

Stuttgart are on a three match winning streak, while Bayern are still unbeaten.

Goals:

Roy Makaay's header in the fifth minute gave the visitors the lead, before Santa Cruz made it 2-0 in the 27th minute after pouncing on a rebound. Stuttgart pulled one back in the second half through a fantastic freekick from substitute Danijel Ljuboja. But Bayern held on to win 2-1.

It was a game of two halves. The first half saw the visitors take total control of the game and show their class. The likes of Ballack, Schweinsteiger, Makaay, Santa Cruz, and Deisler were too good for Stuttgart. The home side were clueless as the defending champions romped to a comfortable 2-0 lead in the first half.

But Stuttgart fought back well in the second half as Bayern reduced their tempo a bit. Danijel Ljuboja who came on as a substitute at half-time was especially good and manager Claudio Ranieri probably should consider starting him in the next game. Ljuboja was the one who pulled one back for the home side, but Bayern held on to the win and grab top spot in the Bundesliga table.
Stuttgart were absolutely hopeless in the first half but responded pretty well in the second. Ljuboja's introduction definately made a difference, and the likes of Zivkovic and Meissner also did well in the second half. However it still wasnt enough to find the equaliser.

For Bayern the three main performers were Michael Ballack, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Roy Makaay. Roque Santa Cruz also had a good game scoring one goal and creating the other. Sebastian Deisler also impressed during the game. Bayern looked to be running away with the game in the first half, but had to face a resurgent Stuttgart side in the second. Ljuboja's goal in the 68th minute made the final section of the game very interesting indeed.
Michael Ballack was named man of the match for producing a masterful display that was great to watch. He pretty much controlled the game today.

The stats indicate an even game, but as mentioned above, it was a game of two halves. The first one was completely Bayern's while Stuttgart came back well in the second. Although we werent able to prevent the defeat. The visitors also made better use of the ball.

Note: Oliver Kahn is named as Jens Mustermann in FM2006 because of copyright issues

Bayern beat Stuttgart to go top

Makaay's goal gets Bayern off to a perfect start

Goals from Roy Makaay and Roque Santa Cruz put Bayern in front in the first half, but substitute Danijel Ljuboja's free kick in the second half setup a thrilling end to the game. But Bayern held on to win and as a result go top of the Bundesliga table.

Bayern showed their true class in the first half and completely dominated the game. They took the lead as early as the fifth minute when Roque Santa Cruz's cross was headed into the Stuttgart net by an unmarked Roy Makaay. The visitors celebrated their fine start to the game in front of the screaming away fans.

Michael Ballack then had two good shots, one from distance and once from inside the box, but in both cases his shot was just wide of goal.

In the 27th minute Roque Santa Cruz put Bayern 2-0 up after the Paraguayan striker pounced on the rebound after Stuttgart goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand had intially kept out Deisler's curling shot. Santa Cruz sprinter to the corner flag, jumped and punched the air in joy. The visiting Bayern fans could once again be heard loud and clear.

Sebastian Deisler had another good shot on goal but Timo Hildebrand was able punch it out for a corner.

Stuttgart were almost non-existent in this first half and had just two shots on goal. Silvio Meissner had a weak shot on goal early on which was held easily by Kahn and Tomasson's decent strike mid-way through the half was also under Kahn's control.

The second half saw Stuttgart manager ring in a change. Danijel Ljuboja was brought on for Mario Gomez who was very disappointing in the first half. And the change seemed to bring in some life in the home side as they played a whole lot better in the second half. Gronkjaer and Tomasson both had chances and in the 68th minute, Ljuboja pulled one back with a beautifully taken free-kick, to which even the great Oliver Kahn had no answer. Ljuboja picked up the ball from inside the goal and ran back to the half line, clearly indicating that Stuttgart were going fight back and press for the equaliser and maybe even the winner.

Roque Santa Cruz could have put the game beyond Stuttgart when he picked up a lovely ball from Bastian Schweinsteiger and fired it low in attempt to beat Hildebrand at his near post. But the Stuttgart keeper got down in time to make the save and push the ball away for a corner. Schweinsteiger himself then had a long range shot which curled in, but dint hit the target.

Silvio Meissner and Claudio Pizarro had chances for their respective sides, but were unable to find the back of the net. And when the referee blew the final whistle, the visitors celebrated an impressive and crucial win. Stuttgart were handed their second defeat in the Bundesliga, thus ending their three match winning streak. Bayern on the other hand go to the top of the table.

Michael Ballack was instrumental in his team's win

Michael Ballack was rightfully named man of the match. The German captain had a fantastic game today and was instrumental in his sides win.

Stuttgart assistant manager Andreas Brehme said Bayern proved their class today but was happy with the way his team responded in the second half.

"Bayern showed their true class in the first half and were in complete control of the game. We were reduced to spectators and were unable to compete with them. But Ranieri's speech at half time coupled with the introduction of Ljuboja inspired our players to put in a much improved display in the second half, although it was still not enought to avoid defeat," said Brehme.

Bayern manager Felix Magath said this win was just what his team needed to get back on track.

"After a less than impressive start to the season, we have won one of the most important games of the campaign. And what is even better is the manner in which we won it. I thought we were simply awesome today and completely flawless in the first half. It was a treat to watch them play football," said a rather happy looking Magath.

Man of the match Michael Ballack said his team had to battle hard to hold on the win.

"We had a good first half, but they came back hard and strong in the second, and we had to work very hard to hold on to the win. Their goal came at a crucial time and made the final part of the game very tricky for us. But we held on and got the result we wanted. Now we have to work hard and improve on this result," added Ballack.

Thats disappointing. Pity that Gomez couldn't live up to his promising training. Hitz and Gronk were pretty subdued by the look of it.

And what sort of copyright issues prevent just Kahn's name.

Well I believe Kahn has copyrighted his name and games or anything else that uses it need to take his permission. Kahn sued EA for not doing so in FIFA 2002.

Oh! Thats weird because CM 2006 has Kahn as is and he even goes on to become a manager in the game.

2 - 1 loss at home to the best team in the league is still a positive result. it gives your charges an idea of exactly where they have to be to be at the top of the league and also shows that they arent that far away.

thats an interesting note about khan. im pretty sure hes in CM06

From wikipedia

Kahn maintains strict control over his image, therefore, he does not allow his name to be used in some football simulation games such as Football Manager, where he instead appears as Jens Mustermann (Mustermann being the fictitious name used in sample IDs and passports, Jens as provocation because it is the first name of his biggest rival, Jens Lehmann).

I would assume CM have bought the rights to his name.

(5.10.2005-7.10.2005)

After the game, Ranieri sent his assistant manager Andreas Brehme to do the post-game interview. Himself he went and spoke to this players and encouraged them despite the defeat.

"We have played well and have lost to a very good team. But I dont mind because we gave it our best shot. I am particularly pleased with the response I got in the second half from you guys. We just need to forget about this game now and keep on working hard."

"Also now you will be off for a few days from club duties because of the international matches. As you must have known already, those who are not on international duty will have to resume training from Saturday, while the others can come and join the squad on the 13th. And heres wishing you all the best for the international matches."

Ranieri too had taken the next two days off, and spent the entire time with his family and made a short trip to Italy as well.

(8.10.2005-12.10.2005)

After two days of rest, Ranieri and his staff reported to duty on Saturday. Over the next five days all the coaches were involved in light training sessions with those players who were not on international duty. Ranieri alsots had a meeting with the scouts before sending them to different parts of the world looking for potential signings in either the January or summer transfer windows.

Ranieri talks to the scouts

"I want you to look for young hardworking lads who can grow and enhance their talent at this club. I am particularly interested in a central defender, and with our current wage budget situation, it is difficult to land some of the better known stars, so we have to spot and develop prospective players."

Himself Ranieri saw some of the international games including Germany's friendly with Turkey. Thomas Hitzlsperger came off the bench in the second half and did well. Oliver Kahn started on goal, and hence Hildebrand had to just sit and watch. Germany won 1-0 thanks to Podolski's piledriver in the 34th minute.

Good performance in both games by Hitzlsperger

On the 12th Ranieri and assistant manager Andreas Brehme were both present at Kaiserslautern where Germany played and beat China 4-0 in another friendly. Hitzlsperger started on the left instead of Schweinsteiger, and setup the first goal. Hildebrand was again on the bench, as Jens Lehmann started on goal for Germany.
