BCCI announces squad for Videocon trinations tournament

The Board for Cricket Control in India has named a 15 man squad for the upcoming Videocon cup tournament involving India as hosts, New Zealand and Pakistan.

The 15 man squad sees Rahul Dravid take over the captaincy from Saurav Ganguly after a four year long reign. Virender Sehwag is named Dravid?s deputy. Sachin Tendulkar misses out due to injury and is replaced by the agile Rohan Gavaskar.

Mumbai is hence represented by just one player, Ajit Agarkar, but he too might not feature in the starting XI facing competition from the likes of Ashish Nehra, Laxmi Balaji and Zaheer Khan.

Selector Kiran More said: ?We believe this is the strongest Indian team at the moment without Sachin Tendulkar. With players like Rohan Gavaskar, Ajit Agarkar and Yuvraj Singh in the side the captain will have the option of using them as full fledged allrounders, something which is vital in the 50 over game.?

Rahul Dravid, taking over the reigns from Saurav Ganguly

Indian captain Rahul Dravid looked confident taking over the captaincy from Saurav Ganguly.

?Its an honour to be captain of India, and I am looking forward to a good start in this tournament. Saurav did a fantastic job as captain, and I will have to work hard along with the team if we are repeat our heroics during 2002 and 2003, when we played really well.? said Dravid.

India play New Zealand in the first match of the tournament at Mumbai.

Indian squad:

Rahul Dravid (Capt), Virender Sehwag, Saurav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Rohan Gavaskar, Mahendra Dhoni, Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Ajit Agarkar, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Laxmi Balaji.

New Zealand arrive

THE KIWIZ HAVE ARRIVED

New Zealand have touched down on Mumbai ahead of the triangular series involving India and Pakistan. New Zealand have a day off before playing a warm-up match against the Board President's XI. Their first competetive game is against the hosts at Mumbai.

Stephen Fleming is rated as one of the best captains in the world

New Zealand have a full strength squad that sees ace fast bowler Shane Bond make a comeback after three years due to injury. And the former policeman is rather pleased to be back playing international cricket.

"Its been a tough staying away from the game for so long, but now I hope to continue from where I left, and do what I think I do best and thats picking wickets." said Bond.

His captain, Stephen Fleming is also pleased to have Bond back in the team and is also optimistic about his team's chances in the triseries tournament.

"We have missed Bond over the past few years and its great to have him back. He has pace as well swing and after playing him in the nets I am confident that he is ready to get back on to the field."

And regarding the triseries he had this to say:

"I am really looking forward to this series against two quality sides in India and Pakistan. It is going to be tough, every match in this series, but with the squad that we have got and keeping in mind our record in one dayers, I think we have a good chance of winning this tournament."

So the Kiwi captain seems very confident indeed, but whether his words come true or not, that only time will tell.

NZ Squad:
Stephen Fleming (captain), Daniel Vettori (vice-captain), Andre Adams, Nathan Astle, Shane Bond, Chris Cairns, Hamish Marshall, Brendon McCullum, Craig McMillan, Jacob Oram, Kyle Mills, Matthew Sinclair, Scott Styris, Lou Vincent, Daryl Tuffey.

"oh no! Sachin out of injury whats gonna happen now, we have already lost" This might have been the reaction of many indian fans if that had happened 6-7 years ago. But now with the likes of many young players like Sehwag, Kaif, Yuvraz, this is not the case anymore. I think India stands a very good chance of winning the videocon cup as they also have the home advantage.

I will be looking forward to read your story vaughan. Hope it turns out to be a great thread. Good Luck

look out mvaughans back!!! good luck mate.

Game One Preview

India vs New Zealand - Match Preview

Hosts India take on New Zealand in the first match of the Videocon Cup today, a tournament that involves Pakistan as the third team. India, being captained by Rahul Dravid for the first time on a permanent basis, are without the injured Sachin Tendulkar.

Indian coach Greg Chappell is however confident ahead of the first match.
"A player with so much experience and talent will no doubt be missed, but I believe this is a good oppurtunity for the other players to prove something to the selectors and fans."

Zaheer Khan wants a good start

Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan is looking for a good start into the tournament and wants to be amongst the wickets from the very first match.
"It is important that we start well as even one bad match could put us under a lot of pressure. It is thus essential for us to pick up wickets early."

New Zealand got their short Indian tour to a good start with a 98 run win in the warmup game against the Board President's XI. Nathan Astle was the star performer for the Kiwiz in that game slamming 91 from 73 balls.

Astle scored 91 against the Board President's XI

"It felt nice to get some runs and also get a feel of the conditions before the tournament started. We won comprehensively in the end, and it will definately help the team in the match against India." said Astle.

So an exciting game in prospect between these two strong one day sides. New Zealand have never enjoyed playing in India, but their recent form in the shorter version of the game puts them as favourites to win this tournament.

Match ONE - India vs NZ

INDIA v NEW ZEALAND at Mumbai

The first match of the Videocon Cup sees India take on New Zealand in Mumbai. India, now being led by Rahul Dravid will want to improve on their poor performances last season, even though they will be without Sachin Tendulkar for most of the next twelve months. New Zealand on the other hand will want to prove a point or two after being demolished by rivals Australia in both tests and one dayers.

Well conditions are good for cricket today. Its bright, sunny and a very clear sky above. However it is a bit hot which might pinch the Kiwiz during the match. The pitch looks very dusty which means it will have some turn on it later on, but runs are guaranteed on this wicket. It will be definitely better to bat first on this wicket, and then use your spinners in the 2nd innings.

The toss: New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has won the toss and put his team in to bat first.

Stephen Fleming said:
It?s a good wicket for batting, so if we can get the first use of it and put up a good total, then I think we can put the Indians under pressure chasing it.

Rahul Dravid said:
I would have liked to bat first too, but I think if we can pick up a few early wickets and restrict them to less than 220, we will be able to chase without much problems.

So the players are making their way to the middle now, and the huge turnout here in Mumbai is making itself heard loud and clear.
