WADA asks ICC to comply by November 2011 | Cricket News | Cricinfo ICC Site | Cricinfo.com

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) today asked the ICC to give a final push to convince its member boards to accept the contentious whereabouts clause by November 2011, failing which it would be declared non-compliant to the WADA code.

"We don't set deadlines. Being a signatory, we expect the ICC and cricket to remain committed to the WADA Code. The ICC has done a lot in the last three years, now they just need to give the final push," WADA director general David Howman told reporters.

The whereabouts clause requires cricketers to furnish details of their location three months in advance. India's cricketers, backed by the BCCI, rejected the WADA code because of this clause, saying it represented a violation of privacy and a security threat. Howman said that it was up to the ICC to convince BCCI and other member boards ahead of the November 2011 deadlin

So the battle begins, ICC and the rest of cricket vs BCCI. IMO the ICC needs to force the BCCI to accept the clause.

Cricket will never get to the Olympics without WADA.

We don't want that at the cost of players' security.. do we?

It's India dude, we already have enough threats, why make it simpler for the terrorists and criminals to target high profile players?

I say, find an alternative or start a parallel Olympics. :D

Why should the rest of the cricket community have to suffer. Its bullshit. The ICC needs to be an authoritarian force, this should not even be a choice.

^ Ya, and may be they should double the security if they are so afraid.

I don't really think cricket has a place at the olympics. I already think it's stupid to have tennis and football there. it's not going to increase the profile of cricket. in britain, we're footballing mad and we don't show much if any of the football there, because we don't take part. (and possibly neither would the english cricket team for the same reasons)

However, if any nation would want it you'd think it would be india since they don't have much presence there at all. don't even do that well in the hockey anymore and it might actually give the olympics exposure in india.

Being in the Olympics is not more important than the security of the players. No one can be believed in these days, and a small leak of the "whereabouts" of cricketers could have serious repurcussions on their lives.

ICC needs to find its own clause and forget about Olympics. But most likely, the BCCI will eventually agree to it (along with the cricketers).

It's not exactly an unreasonable concern, FIFA ran into the same problem not long ago. FIFA and WADA came to an agreement, but only because the clause was relaxed.

If this is true, then the BCCI is well within their rights to reject that clause.

What do "whereabouts" constrain, anyway? Continent? Country? City? Neighborhood?

Tennis players had to do this too but they don't get mad because of security concerns but because of the stupidity of the rule. They have to let these people know their schedule and where they are going to be at certain times of the day and then these people that do the testing can show up at any time and start testing the player.
WADA is going a bit too far with this, you want to test players for drugs and what not then surprise them in camps and after matches, not during. I am all for players being tested but not when you have to plan your life according to it.

Oh c'mon, its not about BCCI bullying a series in their favour or something. It's about player's life.

It's similar to not forcing Aussies and English to tour Pakistan. If they can be concerned about their lives why can't we be? Is something wrong in us being cautious about our safety? Or is it only allowed to English/Oz players?

You just sounded little too arrogant there. Not kool.

Im looking at the bigger issue. WADA is something the ICC and all the rest of the boards want. The ICC should be able to force the decision onto 1 single objecting board. If it was any board other than BCCI there would not even have been any debate.

When was the last time India were in Pakistan? England went there in 05 last time I think.

Just to make it very clear at the beginning, I'm not very good with words. So, please unnecessarily don't pick my words to use against me. I'm pretty sure you got what I wanted to say : You can't force players for anything which might put their lives at risk.

Now, be it be Indians, English or Australian.

No issue is EVER bigger than the lives of human beings. Nothing!

And its not about BCCI, its about high profile Indian players. This "whereabout" thing is like inviting the wrong elements to come and do something even when they don't want to. It's India and you don't find any better target than cricket to get the limelight or to spread terror. WADA issue is nothing compared to what MIGHT happen if things go wrong.
