Watson as test opener?

Cameron White is a better option IMO.

Pretty sure they would go for someone younger than Dussey.

I was about say David Hussey. Why do you think should he be overlooked for someone younger? I think David is an awesome bat, handy bowler and though White has better cumulative figures than Hussey to some extent, lets give Hussey a series. You never know what the 2 Hussey's could do.

Btw is it too early to consider Mitchell Marsh as an option? The kid is in amazing form.

I was thinking more along the lines or a terrible selection than too early.

Yea, because he has all those FC 100's and all :facepalm

Oops just looked at his FC record and it's not good at all.:p I must've confused it with his List A form.

Yep, been in amazing form in the 3 FC games he's played. Laughable suggestion. If Brad Hodge was fit and hadn't retired he'd walk into this side, David Hussey should be miles ahead of Smith, Marsh and Ricky Ponting's 1 year old Daughter as well. Probably a shame that Luke Pomersbach acted like a knob also, he'd surely have been up for consideration if Smith and Marsh are.

Where has Shaun Marsh disappeared? He was injured for awhile, made a comeback a few months ago, and has vanished again. I think if we get him in, end of the issues.

The only reason to break up our opening pair is to bring in Hughes, who has been one of the better openers in domestic cricket in the last 2 years and has 15 years in his career still. Blooding him early wouldn't be bad. But if you did that, Katich would move to 4 and Hussey to 6. Katich bats 3/4 for NSW and Hussey is our best batsmen with the tail.

Watson won't be moved from opener now, once Katich retires that will be the entrance for Hughes. Khawaja has performed in all spots and would go fine at 6. Its the spot that youngsters usually start from.

D Hussey is nowhere near selection, not young enough and is known to have a suspect technique against fast bowling. His record at the Gabba and at the WACA aint great. He scores a lot of runs at the MCG and Adelaide. Even Cam White has a suspect technique, nothing at all solid like Hussey and even Bell overnight- who was rock solid. White scored runs at 3 in England in the one dayers but looked all at sea a lot of the time, his footwork is very much lacking but he can hit it miles and miles.

You want a #6?

I can't believe I agree. Hughes is a better candidate right now than any of the other middle order guys knocking on the door. The only reason I can think of that he can't play well at #6 is that he's not used to it.

For what it's worth, here's how I'd rate potential replacements right now:
1. Phil Hughes
2. Cameron White - he's not obviously better with bat than most of these guys, but gets extra points for ODI form, leadership potential, slip catching and ability to bowl a bit. Note I'm not particularly a White-fanboy, it's just the selectors will always go for these things in a tight race for a spot
3. Chris Rogers - Ponting/squad don't like him it's rumoured, so he mightn't be a chance
4. Dave Hussey - as Robelinda points out, has technical worries to down play his run scoring record. Age doesn't really help Dave or Rogers either.
5. Brad Hodge - too old to get picked for an unimportant series and now that he's retiring - forget it.
6. Mark Cosgrove - would be a good #6 I reckon
7. Michael Klinger
8. Usman Khawaja - NSW bias might get him in quicker :p
9. George Bailey
10. Shaun Marsh
Others: Adam Voges, Phil Jaques, Steve Smith.

How those guys fit into the order is a whole different story. Watson probably stays up top for now. Does Katich move? He looks too dodgy against spin to me to get put down lower. The more I think about it, the more I like Hughes at #6.
