Why is my laptop being so difficult!!!!!!

OMG, again Tom? :p You should curb your surfing practices really... fetishes get you nowhere. :p

Anyways, I'm not the best man to get virus problems solved, Abhas and Kev probably are. But one easy solution that I can give is, download one of those Windows XP live cd's available in many places. Use them, run Windows through them, and then maybe install a free antivirus (avast! I would recommend) on that temporary windows if possible, and then scan it after updating it. This way you can eliminate viruses interfering even with scanning.

Tom, Did you do what I said regarding the Hosts File?

Abhas added 9 Minutes and 24 Seconds later...

Used regcure (?20:mad) and CC and they have made it slightly faster but it still isn't what it should be. How do I defrag the HD?

How could I find out if it is?

Download Memtest86. It is a free tool to test your RAM.

I dunno if this helps, but AVG came up with a message saying something like "Unable to update. Invalid Control CTF File" or something like that

I don't have that folder for Vista which they talk about

You need to look for this path:
C:\ProgramData\avg8\update\download

If you don't have the Program data folder, then just copy paste this link in the explorer address bar. It should navigate to the required folder.

Better, download this utility to delete the .CTF files automatically

About the AVG thing, it's happening to my laptop as well, even though everything else is running smooth. I think it is something on AVG's side.

How much hard drive space do you have and have left. To defrag ur hard drive download this:

Currently defragging. Over 2000 defraged files as I speak and it is about a third done  I also have 14.5 GB free out of 69.7 GB

Cheers for the help Abhas. I have changed the host file I am going to re-boot the sytsem after I have finished defragging. Once I have rebooted I'll do the rest of the stuff you suggested if it hasn't worked

I wish. The uni has everything blocked. I really don't know how I have got something this time.

What exactly of Memtest86 do I download? (Link please?)

Right AVG still doesn' work, perhaps Zoraz has a point. Comp is still a bit slow though :mad

Try freeing up hard drive space by deleting some games and stuff (e.g STALKER:p). make sure that you defrag it regularly. The laptop should be fine just download regcure for free as i said and go to the startup bit on the left side. Disable most of the items (or all) that you do not want to start up.

MacWorld added 1 Minutes and 21 Seconds later...

Ok make sure you defrag it and delete apps you do not need (and large files/games). Also download regcure and click manage start up and disable most if not all of the items there so it starts up faster. This should work.

Noooo. Stalker is staying. I only have 3 big games on my laptop. I think there were 8,000 things that defrag found and sorted out :p

so does it work better...

make sure you use regcure to get rid of start up programs.

It made it slightly better, but it still isn't what it was. I did a scan with Windows Defender and that came up clean, so I don't think it is spyware. I have used all the programmes recommended so far, except that thing to test my RAM as I was unsure of how it worked. So that could mean it is faulty RAM

If you have a virtual Drive software like Alcohol120, of Daemon Tools, or Magic ISO, try mounting the ISO image, and run it in Windows.
