Why New Zealand is not No.1 team even though they have great bowlers like Vettori, Shane Bond?

I thought he had valid points. In fact I thought that he had sugar coated it a bit. You could ask who are the Test quality seamers now on NZ (now that Bond and O Brien are gone)? I can't think of anyone who stands out or could walk onto any of the top 4 teams.

Batting wise he has another valid point. It says a lot about the team when Vettori is the best batsman

I think Daniel Vettori is very special, I think though the way the team has gone has affected his bowling a little, he isn't a wicket taker anymore really more of a guy who builds pressure because thats what they need from him, he bats and scores hundreds because they need that.

I think also he is one of the best captains in world cricket right now, if you guys didn't have Vettori I don't know where you would be ranked.

Vettori doesn't really have the whole spin thing or Doosra thing. The surprise element of playing him has gone. Players know what they're going to get. He's exceptional at pace change etc. so he's very hard to score off. Any spinner would be in the same situation really. There's a few new ones around, but give them a long time in the game and players will be used to facing them. (Talking Swann, Harris, Hauritz etc) who are similar - finger spinners though they all get a bit more turn (or a lot more)

The fact that Vettori still performs without really any attacking weapons shows his class. Against new batsmen he often is all over them, but the experienced know what he does.

Can't beat Vettori for accuracy or economy.

He said we needed middle order batsman when we don't, we have a solid middle order. We need top order batsman and have needed them since I've been alive. I'm talking about tests obv.

Why is it so bad when Vettori is the best batsman? He's actually one of the best in the world according to stats last year. Taylor also averaged 55 last year so when don't rely on Vettori completely when it comes to batting. When Ryder comes back we'll have 3 quality test players, it's just developing Watling and Guptill that is the key.

I do agree with him on needing a test quick though.

It is often seen that only one player do's everything for newzealand in a match.
For e.g., If its Vettori's day he will hit half century and take 4 wickets but others get smashed and all other batsmen collapse.

Another reason is Mccullum's unstable form.

I cant even remember the last time NZ beat Aus in a test match, was it 1990 in that one off test? Bloody long time.

I think they will be more of a challenge than Pakistan but less of a challenge than the Windies were.

I think in the ODIs Australia will be in for a good contest as they always are against our ODI side. In the tests, I don't expect us to win any games. I think with us losing Bond and O'Brien as well as Ryder still being out we'll get smashed.
