Windows 7

Still seems a lot more stable then Vista. :p

Anyone know a release date for this? I heard sometime in August, is that true? Prices?

This beta will end in August. We can expect the final release in December this year or early next year. About the prices: If you buy a new pc with Vista from about July onwards, you'll get a free upgrade to win7 (not confirmed).

If I get this, will I still have my files etc? Or will they all be removed?

yes you can, it will move all your original files to a windows.old folder inside the Local Disk. Or you can partion it and use Dual boot.

However as mentioned do not install this on a primary pc as it could crash.

Just went ahead and created a 20gig partition for Windows 7. I was able to get from power up (computer) to usable desktop in 32 minutes. Extremely impressive. It came with support for my wireless device, HP touchpad media controls and video drivers as well!

Actually, this is quite amazing considering it is a beta release. There's not a lot of envelope pushing, but still, it looks very polished. Literally.

Yeah its very polished for a BETA. And sohum, I share similar results, I went through all that in around 26 mins. This is frigging awesome, fastest install of Windows I ever had since Win 98.

How much time it took for Win 7 Tto get installed on your PC? The design is really awesome but once again less compatibility.:(. The best thing is that it's kernel memory is improved.:)

I am surprised. I am running Aero and have 1.8g of RAM available compared to my Vista install, which takes about 300m more, without Aero! And this is the Ultimate version as well, I'm sure Home Basic/Premium and Business will have less stuff going on in the background.

I have high hopes for this. Compatibility hasn't been an issue for me--I've been able to get almost any software I used on Vista64 work on this.

Anyone tried running .avi files and Windows live apps as they crash 7 for me.

Apart from that it seems stable.

I was able to run Windows Live Messenger.. haven't tried AVI files yet. Remember, AVI files do not really define what codec is being used. The AVI file you are using may be using a non-supported codec.

Always have VLC player on hand. It uses its own codec library, so you can quickly see if you have a problem with codecs, a particular media player or a greater system problem.

If only I had a little more HD space I'd install VS2008 and Office 2007 and use Windows 7 a little more. As it is, I have to boot up into Vista whenever I need to do something productive and everyone knows how long it takes Vista to boot up!
