The women?s world cup that is currently taking place?hasn’t?got the attention it deserves. 2 years ago, when the men?s world cup was going on, the atmosphere was totally different and it taking place in India, took the excitement to another level. Women cricketers have sadly not got the attention they deserve and neither have we seen many people coming to the stadiums to watch them play. Fair to say, controversies in regard to the tournament had started before the world cup even started and that perhaps gave the tournament a sort of negative publicity. Besides, the publicity for the tournament was slightly on the lower side as compared to the publicity men?s world cup got.

Genuinely, women?s cricket certainly?isn’t?as popular as men?s cricket and that?s something to debate upon. The passion, hard work and determination to play the game is certainly same for both, however the fame and popularity that they get in return is hugely dissimilar. ?Women?s world cup started 2 years before the men?s world cup and yet it?hasn’t?really come a long way since, it still struggles to make a name for itself i.e. women?s cricket.

Some women cricketers raised a very fair point that leagues like IPL must also be started for women?s cricket progress, as it will also help them financially and also take their game to another level and their demand is totally genuine. Why?shouldn’t?they get the chance to play in such leagues, which gives them the platform to play freely and with players from different countries! Not only will it improve them as individual players but also help them gain the popularity, which women?s cricket currently lacks.

Why is men?s cricket popular? One of the main reasons for its popularity at least in India is, we get to see the international cricket taking place all around the world through the median of tv. ?Whether it?s international series? or domestic cricket or even t20 leagues, an Indian fan has the liberty to watch them all, through the median of tv and for this channels like ESPN deserve a whole lot of credit. However, when it comes to women?s cricket and even their international matches, things are immensely different.

Until the 2013 women?s WC started, I had no idea that Indian team had been into the semi?s in the last 2 editions of the cup and that to me,?isn’t?a surprise seeing how well the team has played in the last 2 matches. Even though they lost to England, intend to win could easily be seen. Women cricketers are highly passionate to play for their country just like men cricketers and cricket authorities throughout the world must look to take every right step in order for the emergence of women?s cricket. When we talk about treating women and men as equals, we must look at it fairly. Hence, as far as cricket is concerned both must be treated as equals and women must too get the opportunity to gain the popularity and fame they deserve and money too, which it their right after playing cricket for their country through the year.

Women?s cricket can make this sport even more popular throughout the world and would certainly help spread the awareness that women and men must be treated as equals. Whether it be Belinda Clark who has the highest score of 229* in ODI?s or Mithali Raj who scored her first century at the age of 16. These records show that women?s cricket too has very high standard of cricket being played and it must be enhanced further by introducing leagues and telecasting it on tv, which would almost certainly take cricket to another level.
