Imran Khan will have been disappointed to have lost the toss but on a Gabba pitch already showing signs of inconsistent bounce, he at least had the arsenal to take advantage of those conditions. They would have sensed a real opportunity too after Wasim and Waqar had Hayden, Bradman and Ponting back in the hut with the score on just 21. Morris and Chappell worked really hard to rebuild from there and had put on over 50 by lunch. Khan got Wasim to try and bounce out Chappell after the interval and it was safe to say that the Australian won the battle. By the time Pakistan gave up and tossed the ball to Saqlain, Chappell had 3 sixes and had a half-century, but it took just two balls for the spinner to remove him for 65. Morris just kept going though and by tea he was on 90 and Australia were 211-4. Keith Miller was in destructive form as well and got to his 50 a ball after Morris had brought up a brilliant hundred. At this point Khan was desperate for Wasim and Waqar to extract some reverse, Waqar did immediately and Hanif dropped Morris only to recover things next ball by pouching Miller. Wasim then picked up Morris for the English Nelson and when Waqar got Davidson, 260-4 had become 279-7. They were tiring though and Gilly was threatening, so Imran Khan turned to himself and Shaoib with the new cherry. It was the skipper that did the job though, Gilly caught 2nd slip and Lillee LBW and Day One ended at 306-9. Warne slogged a couple of lusty blows on an overcast second morning before missing one from Wasim to finish things up on 317.
Hanif Mohammad and Saeed Anwar obviously looked at those cloudy conditions and decided the only thing of importance was to stay there, which they did by grinding out a century partnership through the morning and most of the afternoon at less than 2.5 an over before Anwar went just short of a half-century. It was 117-1 at Tea and it wasn't until Javed Miandad came to the crease that Pakistan began to show some impetus. The new ball did for him though and they were 187-3 at the close.
Hanif Mohammad eventually brought up a century after 338 balls and alongside Mohammad Yousuf ground things out to 247-3 at lunch. Yousuf then went for a 95-ball 28 and Inzamam ul-Haq tried to up the tempo until he top-edged a pull off McGrath straight into his jaw and crumpled in a heap. By tea it was 314-4 but it was already safe to say that it was probably 5 as Inzamam had gone off to hospital. Hanif eventually departed having faced an unbelievable 494 balls for his 156. Wasim added a breezy 20 before Warne went to work on Saqlain and Shoaib before Davidson picked up the last to keep the lead down to 65.
65 behind was 62 by the close as they survived the two overs on the third evening. But they started day four with a ludicrous run-out that was all Hayden's fault but was the end of Morris. Hayden very quickly went to work making things right though and while Bradman fell to his opposite number, alongside Ponting, he marshalled them through to lunch with a lead of 22. His 50 came soon afterwards with a six off Saqlain and after that Pakistan lost control. Ponting's 50 came at a speed that made Hayden look pedestrian and was then dropped by Hanif just shy of his hundred. Waqar then dropped a simple return chance in the last over before tea to complete a horror session for the visitors that was 174-0.
Ponting went to a hundred and Hayden 150 before the former finally fell to an absolute grubber with the lead now 240. The catalogue of errors continued as Hanif dropped Chappell and after Waqar had him out, he got Keith Miller out with a no-ball. Saqlain finally ended Hayden's innings and Imran decided to take the new ball immediately with Australia effectively 281-5 with 45mins left of day four.
Younis Khan immediately put Gilchrist down at slip, before Imran removed Miller and bowled Davidson in the first ball of his next over. Warne plundered 16 before Imran then removed both him and Gilchrist in the space of 3 balls. Day Four ended at 404-9 and Wasim cleaned things up by getting Lillee in the second over of the morning.
344 to win in basically a day, but given the speed they had scored in the first innings and Inzamam being unavailable, the visitors were distinctly outsiders. McGrath's impact was immediate, Anwar lasted just the one ball, Younis Khan 19 and Miandad 6, all done by inconsistent bounce. After his first innings, the Hanif Mohammad wicket was always going to be vital and as so often with Australia, the man to do it was Warne. 4 down by lunch, basically 5 with no Inzamam. They didn't make tea.
