So here we are to the warm up game for the Elite Division Crusaders against the 3rd division Cardif Blues. Zwicker captains the Cardif Blues while rival flanker McCaw will captain the champion Crusaders. Almost all of the Cardif Blues players are rookies with only Lomu, Yapp, Sidoli and Zwicker who usually play for the team. The Crusaders starting their most formidble lineup which included the likes of Carter, McCaw, Mauger, Jack and MacDonald.
The first half of the game was mainly a territory game, both teams unable to score any points, though Carter was deadly acurate with his positional kicking, on more than one occasion from inside his own half he would be able to kick for touch and land the ball just inside the line for some very close attacking lineouts but the Blues were able to thwart the challenge of the crusaders.
Less than five minutes into the second half a huge break was made by the prop Toby Chapman but without the pace of a back he was forced to run for the corner. Just before the cover tackle from MacDonald he was able to off load to Matt Roberts, who quickly moved it out wide to Liebenberg, who drew and passed until it got out to Edwards. Edwards was cunningly cut down by a quick Dan Carter just meters away from the try line.
After a couple of pick and goes, Yapp sees a huge gap and goes for the line, the ref refers it upstairs and the TMO gives the try.
Just four minutes later Carter slots a 45m Drop goal right down the middle of the posts.
During the game the front row of Chapman, Yapp and hooker Woosaah were put under alot of pressure, and lost 2 crucial scrums. which leads to huge pressure soon on their own line.
Soon later an overlap occurs and Laulala gets a a break up the sideline. Dean Sherr missing the crucial cover tackle and Laulala scores in the corner. Carter kicks the goal easily from the sideline.
For the rest of the game the game was kept down in the Blues half and with only 27% of the territory you would have thought that the Crusaders would have scored more points with the possetion they had deep in the Blues half.
Getting ready for the first game of the season for the Blues and it looks like they are going to be a force, at least in defence, to contend for promotion into the 3rd division.
