How can Gill be fined? The dissent wasn't shown on the cricket field, wasn't shown during the course of play.

Hay days of Jagmohan Dalmiya and IS Bindra, the ICC would have been dragged to the ICJ. The point here being that Gills actions aren't mentioned anywhere in the rule book.

Same thought. Is the ICC a dictatorship? Can’t players express their feelings in their own personal space of social media? Gill indulged in sarcasm of the umpire decision, the decision which was obviously wrong.

If this was the IPL, the franchise would’ve paid up the fine amount (RCB and LSG did it for Kohli, Gambhir, Naveen Ul Haq). Hope BCCI bears his match fees and the fine. If not, players were play like robots in international cricket. Already people are crying as to why players are more passionate in IPL than international cricket. These kinda of actions will fast track it (ps. Doesn’t bother me if it happens :D)

I think it has more to do with the fact the match was ongoing when he tweeted.

Oh yeah, when they blackmailed the ICC after Sachin was caught tampering the ball on camera

That way, you should be fining the spectators and the commentators as well
Who cares what the spectators do? If it's anything overly discriminatory or offensive they can get fined or ejected.

Not sure if the commentators showed any dissent since I wasn't watching for most of it, but obviously regulations are different for them than for players.

It’s important that the players respect the umpires. If things like this are let go, then you could eventually get to a place where players feel comfortable intimidating umpires.

And with how people are on social media, a post like that could easily lead to harassment and worse.

People were abusing Green even before Gill got to his antics.

I’m amazed that we even have support for what Gill did during the match. This wasn’t after the game or a few days later, it was soon after he got out. That isn’t sarcasm, that is a ‘petulant man-child who has been in a bubble till now’ response. This was in response to a catch that was legally out too. No idea why there’s comparisons between spectators and commentators here neither of whom are involved in the actual play. The claim that this would make the IPL somehow a place where players show more passion is absolute bonkers when most of them don’t give a crap about it in the first place.

At the end of the day it is up to Gill as to how he responds and reacts in the future to cement his legacy. Jaiswal was pulled off the field by Rahane earlier for aggressive sledging in FC cricket and seemed much calmer and mature in the IPL, hopefully Gill grows into reacting better.
