Day 3, Morning Session

Tendulkar smashes ton before rain falls

There was an interesting beginning to day three of the first Test as Sachin Tendulkar walked out to face Sachin Tendulkar. The batting Tendulkar pumped eight off the over and ten overs later he had his century. The Little Master and Ponting looked at ease throughout the session as the pair guided Jack's XI to 264/3 before rain started to fall in the English capital. That leaves the batting side 265 runs behind but with confidence that they can get somewhere close to C&C XI's first innings total.

Day 3, Afternoon Session

Ponting falls short of century as Tendulkar marches on

Only 12 overs were possible during the afternoon session but there was a big breakthrough for the bowling side. And it came from a rather surprising source as Williamson managed to find Ponting's edge with the opposition captain looking to push one into the off side. Sangakkara made no mistake with the gloves and sent Ponting on his way for 81. That was in the last over of the session, leaving Rahim to face three balls before Tea. Meanwhile, Tendulkar had moved onto 140 and has barely been troubled so far. Could a double century be on the cards after the interval?

Tendulkar reaches seventh double century

Another session, another Tendulkar masterclass. This one resulted in the Indian legend reaching his seventh Test double century, doing so in fine style by slapping Anderson to the boundary three times in one over. By the end of day three he and Rahim had added 110 runs for the 6th wicket and pushed Jack's XI beyond 400. With six wickets still in hand and only two days left there looks to be just one result on the cards.

Pollock secures 66-run lead

If there was to be a result in this match C&C XI would need to be batting before the end of the session. As it turned out, the final wicket of the innings would come on the stroke of Lunch. Tendulkar had earlier been dismissed by Khan for a magnificent 214 before Rahim fell three runs short of a deserved half century. Pollock, who had dismissed Rahim, also took the wickets of Khan and Akhtar in one over to ensure his side would hold a lead. Despite Hadlee's best efforts with a slow 17 off 83 balls, he was the last man dismissed with his side still 66 runs short of C&C XI's first innings total. Attention will now turn to C&C XI's approach to batting with the danger of losing wickets in the search for quick runs and a potential victory on day five.

C&C's XI go on the attack in search of result

The afternoon session made one thing clear: C&C's XI are looking to win this game. Coming out to bat after the lunch break, Sangakkara and Tendulkar put on 70 for the first wicket before Tendulkar was dismissed by Muralitharan LBW for 31 at the end of the 20th over. Sangakkara soon followed just shy of a second half century in the match, also LBW, this time to Anderson. Ponting and Lara continued the momentum, scoring at almost a run a ball to take C&C's XI to 124/2 by the Tea break with a lead of 190. With four sessions left in the match they are going to have to push in the final session of day four to give themselves enough time to try and bowl out Jack's XI.

Day 4, Evening Session

Lara, Ponting and Williamson take lead above 300

The final session of day four continued in the same vain as almost every session in this first Test as the batsmen continued to dominate as the wicket shows no sign of making things easier for the bowlers. Lara's first ball after Tea went top the boundary and he continued in similar fashion to reach another Test fifty. Ponting was dismissed for 43, caught at first slip by Smith off the bowling of Hadlee, whilst Lara followed him back into the pavilion five overs later. Williamson picked up the role of aggressor as he smashed 47 from 50 balls to end the day unbeaten, whilst hero from the first innings, Andy Flower, also finished unbeaten on a more sedate 25 from 47 balls. Smith shows intent to go after 383 target

Well we knew this session would define the Test match and for anyone who thought a draw was the only possible outcome you might want to think again. Williamson and Flower took little time to get runs on the board and when Williamson was dismissed by Khan for 80 declaration swiftly came from the balcony. With 383 to get you would have been forgiven for thinking Smith would come out and play with some restraint to ensure a loss was out of the question, however, he smashed three boundaries off the opening over to signal his intent. By Lunch he had reached 55 from 56 balls, whilst Flower at the other end barely looked to hit it off the square, unbeaten on a timid 7 from 40 balls. With 320 to get and 60 overs to get them in Jack's XI will need to score at 5.33 an over. Meanwhile, C&C's XI need 10 wickets.

Smith onslaught gives Jack's XI a chance

Smith has turned this match on its head! With a draw looking like the best Jack's XI could hope for for much of this Test, Smith's super unbeaten century has given them a sniff of stealing a victory in this first Test match. Flower didn't last long after lunch, falling to Anderson as the Englishman got one to swing back into the batsman and through the gate. That brought Lara to the crease who looked to score freely, eventually being bowled by Rashid for 43 from 50 balls. However, nothing looked like stopping Smith and in the 37th over he brought up his century. The sight of Tendulkar and Smith now at the crease would have put fear into the hearts of the bowlers and the pair remained unbeaten come Tea at 209/2. The equation is simple: score 173 runs in 30 overs to win the match at a rate of 5.77 an over. C&C's XI still need 8 wickets and a victory for them now looks the least likely result with the pitch still playing beautifully.

Jack's XI fall agonisingly short in chase

It was set up for a grandstand finale but it didn't quite get that close. Smith became the third batsman to pass 150 in the Test but soon fell LBW to Khan. That brought Ponting to the crease who did his best to chase the total down singlehandedly, although his partner and hero from the first innings, Tendulkar, didn't do much for the team as he batted with a strike rate of under 60 runs per 100 balls. He made it passed fifty but was dismissed not long after by Akhtar in what would prove the last wicket of the match. In the end Jack's XI fell an agonising 36 runs short in their bid to snatch victory, although the draw was certainly the fairest result on the basis of the five days.
