Day 1, Morning Session

Ponting and Lara steady the ship after early wickets

From Lord's to the MCG. After a thrilling 1st Test the teams travelled down under for the 2nd Test where they found a pitch that offers a little to both the bowlers and batsmen. Winning the toss, Jack's XI decided to put C&C's XI into bat and it immediately paid off as Hadlee dismissed Sangakkara with no score on the board in the first over. It wasn't long before Muralitharan was brought into the attack and he made immediate damage removing Tendulkar bowled for 11. Lara and Ponting got to work repairing the damage and the Australian picked up his first half century of the series before the Lunch break. The pair finished unbeaten at the break with 109 runs on the scorecard.

Lara and Williamson grind bowlers into submission

After a somewhat even opening session, C&C's XI middle order ensured they would be shaping up for another big score as Lara and Williamson continued Ponting's good work from the morning. The Australian fell to Muralitharan for 79 but that would prove to be the only wicket of the afternoon session. Lara steadily passed fifty but it was Williamson, who starred with the bat in the first Test, who set the MCG alight with some superb stroke play. He reached his half century off just 46 balls and finished the session in similar vein with 74* from 67 balls, almost catching his partner who goes into the Lunch break unbeaten on 91.

Lara reaches 150 as C&C XI dominate day one

Heading into the final session on day one C&C XI looked set to post yet another intimidating first innings total but Muralitharan had other ideas. He removed the dangerous Williamson for 83 bringing to an end a super knock from the New Zealander and picking up his third wicket of the day. Khan then dismissed Flower from the other end and it seemed as if Jack's XI were getting a grip back on the match with the score 295/5. However, Lara was still at the crease and, having picked up his century two overs before Flower's dismissal, made sure he would go into the overnight break on exactly 150* by hitting Muralitharan to the boundary with the last ball of the day. Iqbal remained unbeaten at the other end on 31 and the pair will resume tomorrow hoping to get the score above 400 and somewhere near 500.

Walking out to bat on day two C&C's XI would have been thinking big with Lara and Iqbal still at the crease. However, Jack's XI bowlers got the ball in the right areas from the first over and the introduction of Anderson brought about the end of Lara for a magnificent 154. He then dismissed Pollock for an 11-ball duck sparking a quick collapse of the lower order. Khan dismissed Khan, Hadlee removed Anderson the very next over and when Iqbal's rather uncharacteristic innings of 43 from 136 balls came to an end, C&C XI's were all out for 399. With eight overs to bat before Lunch, Jack's XI opening pair of Smith and Flower negotiated the new ball and went into the interval at 29/0.

Day 2, Afternoon Session

Pollock destroys top order

The afternoon session on day two belonged to one man: Shaun Pollock. Having been one of the star performers during the first Test at Lord's, Pollock picked up where he left off and delivered a brilliant spell of bowling to leave Jack's XI struggling at 126/4 by Tea. Smith and Flower started the session positively, reaching a fifty opening partnership in the 14th over. However, Pollock bowled his fellow countryman Smith through the gate for 35 in the 19th over and then Khan dismissed Flower for 20 in the very next over. Lara and Tendulkar looked to build slowly but the latter became Pollock's second victim of the session when he was trapped LBW on 12. He saved his best for his very last ball of the session as he bowled Ponting for 22 to leave Jack's XI in all sorts of trouble at Tea, still 273 runs behind.

Day 2, Evening Session

Late wicket puts C&C's XI in firm control

It felt as if this final session on day two could prove crucial in the overall state of the Test match and with a late wicket C&C's XI are in firm control with three days still to go. Starting the session at 126/4 with Lara and Rahim at the crease, the pair looked to build a steady partnership but also keep the runs flowing in order to get that lead reduced. Lara reached fifty with relative ease in the 50th over but found himself heading back to the pavilion 15 runs later when he was bowled by Anderson. Things got worse for Jack's XI as Rahim departed in the final over of the day, caught by Tendulkar off the bowling of Akhtar for 39. With Khan and Hadlee at the crease Jack's XI remain 185 behind with just four wickets left and starring at yet another Test where they will start the second innings with plenty of catching up to do.

Starting the third day of the Test match, Jack's XI were looking down the barrel of a huge first innings deficit unless the lower order could provide some resistance. Khan stuck around for 26 balls before he was clean bowled by Anderson before Hadlee, who had played brilliantly for his 31, fell in the 19th over of the session, caught by Lara off the bowling of Khan. However, that would not prove the end of the resistance as Akram and Anderson dug deep and survived the remaining overs to take them to Tea 117 runs behind but with two wickets still in hand.

Tendulkar and Sangakkara establish huge advantage

If the morning session was rather successful for Jack's XI, the afternoon session was down right disastrous. Akram and Anderson, who both dug deep to make scores in the 20s, were dismissed within six balls by Pollock and Khan to bring the innings to an end with Jack's XI still 106 runs behind. If there was any hope of Jack's XI quickly rattling through the C&C's XI top order they were squashed by the imperious duo of Tendulkar and Sangakkara. Tendulkar reached his fifty in rapid time by the end of the 17th over and as the players made their way back to the dressing room at Tea the lead had extended to 214 without the loss of a single wicket. With seven sessions still to go, C&C's XI will feel confident that they can post a big enough target and still leave themselves enough time to dismiss Jack's XI and win the match, something they failed to do in the first Test.

Wickets tumble as Jack's XI claw back into the match

After a dominant afternoon session in which they bowled out Jack's XI and then the opening batsmen put together an unbeaten one hundred run partnership for the opening wicket, C&C's XI would have been buoyant heading into the final session on day three. However, Khan dismissed Sangakkara nine short of a half century in just the fourth over of the session in what proved to be a sign of things to come. Tendulkar reached a magnificent century from 112 balls in the 34th over only to be dropped by Ponting the very next ball. Khan dismissed Ponting for just six a couple of overs later and Hadlee finally got the better off Tendulkar when he was caught by Lara for 116. Williamson, who has been on form so far in the series, hit a rapid 23 off 20 balls before Khan bowled him, before Anderson dismissed Lara for 26 the very next over. Iqbal was sent packing just a few minutes later, dismissed by Khan for a five-ball duck and all of a sudden Jack's XI looked back in the match. Pollock and Flower survived until the end of the day to finish on 241/6, a lead of 339, having lost six wickets for 125 runs in the session.
