The English and Australian seasons pretty much take after each other, the English season finishes and just a few weeks later the Oz one begins, and vice versa. So would a 'hand-over' between the two countries be a good idea?
As it is now, the historic MCC side (now made up of young up-and-coming county cricketers) take on the division 1 champions at Lord's to kick our season off. A Lord's match which has become increasingly dull and poorly attended in the recent years.
My hand-over idea would have the English division 1 champions (looks like this year it will be Durham) taking on the champions of the Sheffield Shield (last season was Victoria), still at Lord's, in a 4-day match.
When the Australian season begins, the English division 1 champions of the recently concluded season would travel there to do the same thing at the home ground of the Sheffield Shield winners (this year would be Victoria v Durham at MCG).
Thoughts?
