YORKSHIRE APPOINT BAINES AS DIRECTOR

Will Baines has been appointed as Director of Cricket by Yorkshire CCC after a turbulent winter, in which Yorkshire had no coach, no captain and an unsettled group of players. Baines said that he hoped to announce some news in the next few days.

Baines, clearly delighted with the news, told the assembled media,
"This is a dream come true for me. I have always wanted to help Yorkshire cricket and this opportunity allows me to do this. I can assure you now that I will put 100% into this and I will make sure my players do to!"

Baines was appointed after playing for the County for 8 years as a Left arm fast bowler, before a serious knee injury forced him to quit. However, he has developed into a pioneering coach, assisting England U19s and the England Lions

Baines is appointed after David Byas left the county by mutual consent in January, and is hoping to improve the team both on and off the field.

BREAKING NEWS
GILLESPIE RELEASED BY YORKSHIRE

ns_sponsor_yorkshire.gif

Will Baines has made his first move as the new Director of Cricket at Yorkshire, releasing Aussie paceman Jason Gillespie.

Gillespie, who only took 36 Championship wickets in his first season with the White Rose, has been released with immediate effect.

On a statement on the YCCC website read,
"The Yorkshire County Cricket Club has reluctantly decided to release pace bowler Jason Gillespie with immediate effect. Director of Cricket Will Baines paid tribute to Jason's time at the club, saying his coaching of the younger players proved invaluable last season. Baines commented that it had been a difficult decision to take but one which the player had accepted."

Gillespie name has been circulated to other counties and it is hoped that he will be able to continue his first class career elsewhere.

Yorkshire are planning to replace Gillespie with an aggressive, fast bowler, with names such as Brett Lee, Shane Bond, and Tino Best touted as replacements. Baines did comment that he was finding it hard to meet the wage demands of the calibre of player he is looking out for.

An announcement on the new overseas player is expected later today.

8th April - YOUNUS Khan has been ruled out for three weeks with a broken jaw. This means he will miss the first two County Championship matches and a Regional Trophy match. Director of Cricket Will Baines said, "This is a massive blow to our pre season preparations but hopefully Younus will make a quick and full recovery"

9th April -
YORKSHIRE made an offer to sign former Sussex youngster Neil Turk. Turk, a promising batsman, only made one first class appearance for Sussex, making 24 runs in his only innings. The 23 year old rejected the contract offer by Yorkshire, who are thinking about whether to improve their first offer.

Great presentation. Surprised to see Jason go as he has been quality player for a long time. Turk is a good signing and so is Tino Best, although he can be a bit too fiery and lose his way. Khan being out is a big blow at start of season. Overall should be high quality season!

very neatly presented, I love it :)

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION 1
19TH - 22ND APRIL

The 2007 season gets underway today with a mouthwatering tussle between Yorkshire and Lancashire. Both sides have strengthened over the winter and will be looking to get off to the best start possible.

Yorkshire Director of Cricket Will Baines has only been in his new job three weeks, but has already significantly improved morale in a squad which was at an all time low during the off season.

Yorkshire are without Younus Khan with a broken jaw, so Craig White fills in. Tino Best makes his debut as an overseas player, opening the bowling with new captain Darren Gough.

Lancashire have new signing David Fulton at the top of their order, with New Zealand international Nathan Astle at three. Lancashire possess a strong bowling attack, with England's James Anderson and Sajid Mahmood, as well as Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan.

Pitch and Weather

Whoever bats first will be looking to make a big score, although the early cloud conditions could help the fast bowlers. Rain interruptions are expected throughout the day.

Lancashire will bat

Highlights of the match as well as a match report will be online after each days play on the YCCC website

What a game to start off with. The roses clash. Fulton and Astle are certainly great editions to the Lancs squad! Will be interesting to see how Matt Wood does as he hasn't really featured much this season for Yorks. With rain around I think this will end up in a draw with both sides making significant scores in their first innings :)

YORKSHIRE v LANCASHIRE
DAY 1 REPORT

BEST BLOWS AWAY RIVALS AS TYKES START WITH A BANG!

56185.jpg

Tino Best took 7-68 on his debut for Yorkshire as Lancashire were 168-9 at the close of day 1.

Best, aggressive and quick from the start, made early inroads, bowling David Fulton in his first over. Best then removed Nathan Astle with the first ball of his third over, but his charge was halted by heavy rain, meaning the players did not get back out on the field until 3:15pm

Rain stops play

However, the rain did not stop Best, who continued where he had left off earlier, having Mark Chilton, who made 24, caught at square leg by Adil Rashid.

Best had his fourth wicket when Stuart Law edged an outswinger to Rudolph at first slip, leaving Lancashire 78/4.

Glenn Chapple was next to go, caught by Joe Sayers at gully for 3, then the mainstay of the innings, Mal Loye, was caught by Craig White for 54 off 58 balls, to give Best his sixth wicket.

Deon Kruis then took his first wicket, having James Anderson caught by Sayers at point for a duck, with the score at 101/7.

Sajid Mahmood was next to go, caught at bat/pad playing a sweep off the bowling of Adil Rashid for 4.

Tino Best then returned to remove Tom Smith, caught at backward point for 11.

Last pair Muttiah Muralitharan and Luke Sutton then survived to the close to make Yorkshire come out again tomorrow to try and finish Lancashire off.

End of Day: Lancashire 168/9 after 63.2 overs (Sutton 42, Muralitharan 4)

Well, well what a debut so far for Tino! at 168/9 on a good batting track is shocking and Lancashire have practically handed the game to Yorkshire on a gold plate. If Yorks can get the wicket quick on day 2 then with rain around they should look to score quickly and get a lead of 100+ :)

I was gonna offer a deal to Fidel Edwards but the games stats indicate that Tino is the better bowler!

Day 2 report tomorrow, and a weird situation takes place ;)
