ICC FTP 2024-31 Cycle

Tell me you are doing this to win most humour award on PC
2 groups of 4 then knockout. Nice, simple and done in 3 weeks.

vs

An endless, mind-numbing round robin and three knockout matches.

or the

2 groups of 7 and then - just because one group stage wasn't enough - another group. Which will be making a return.

--

My preferred format for ICC tournaments would be 4 groups x 4 teams or 4x5 format with a decent knockout stage. Don't mind fewer teams being in a Champions trophy if the format is good.

CWC 2007 would have been the GOAT World Cup if it had gone straight to knockouts.

Every chance of an Ire-Ban quarter-final because of the seeding system they used that year
Seeds:

A1 - :aus: Australia
B1 - :sri: Sri Lanka
C1 - :nzf: New Zealand
D1 - :pak: Pakistan (knocked out by :ire: Ireland)

A2 - :saf: South Africa
B2 - :ind: India (knocked out by :ban: Bangladesh)
C2 - :eng: England
D2 - :wi: West Indies

So assuming that India and Pakistan are drawn against each other because the ICC likes money, the quarter-final draw would be something like this:

A1 vs C2 (:aus: vs :eng:)
B1 vs D2 (:sri: vs :wi:)
----------
C1 vs A2 (:nzf: vs :saf:)
D1 vs B2 (:ire: vs :ban:)

Quarter Finals

Even with the uneven contests in the semis and final, I think that the fairytale story of Ireland (coming within 50 overs of a World Cup final) and the shorter attention span required for the format would have made for an excellent tournament.

Kenya in the 2003 semis (albeit with the help of a walkover) is one great stories that the cricket World Cup really has.

By the time Champions Trophy resumes in 2025, Pakistan would've been the defending champions for 8 years!

If I could ever motivate myself to run leagues, I'd put together a World Cup Alt-Hist to create stories like that as much as possible (but I can't so I won't)
