2003 ASCON Asia Cup

3 injuries in 6 game series... Okay... okay... Cool...
I’m pretty surprised 7/400 ended up being too high in terms of injury odds. Eight injuries across the entire tournament may be a little too many for my liking. India in particular got pretty unlucky although I’ll chalk it up to the number of teams I generated an injury roll for dropped from 10 to 4 for both the Semi’s and the Final.

Too many extras, a poor bowling performance and unstable middle order.
We needed atleast one of top four to stay with the others but their fast scoring did provide us a good score to defend though it's our bowlers who could not utilize the condition as opposition did.

Well Ye De being injured isn’t great… Lei Shan comes in for the final at 6 while Mao Shuren moves up to 5. Shao Zhenkang will also stay in the side after a decent debut game against Qatar. Our chances of winning this game are practically slim to none but we’ll go down swinging for the fences in our efforts to bring the trophy to China.

For those keeping track at home, the hosts of every single Asia Cup have failed to make the final.

2000: Pakistan topped their group only to lose to a decent North Korean side
2001: Japan crashed and burned in one of the biggest meltdowns in Asian Cup history
2002: China got Kazakhstan'd
2003: Qatar was by far and away the 2nd best team this tournament and ended up getting outplayed in their semi-final.

I'm not sure if anyone is going to want to bid for 2005 if this is the record for all host nations.
can I host? Can't do any worse...

India have managed a strong total after being asked to bat first by the Chinese. India started off extremely well however mini collapses through the order prevented India from truly sealing this game as the final twenty overs were thoroughly controlled by China. Vijay Kambli's 139 may be one of the great Asia Cup innings that might seal India's third cup in as many appearances however if you are an Indian fan you might feel as if you were a little cheated and that India failed to truly bat China into the ground. For the Chinese 359 will be a very tough total to chase, especially against this Indian side, both Lei Yu and Tang Deming found very little success with the ball today and were thrown around for free runs however there were some positives for the underdogs. Shi Gen played a good game, taking 2/59 including the big wicket of Kambli whilst He Weimin took 2/80 and a run out taking his wicket contributions to three. Shao Zhenkang also bowled well however for whatever reason he didn't bowl his full allocation of overs, only completing 6 of them with figures of 1/31. We'll take a half hour innings break before coverage resumes for China's run chase against India... however frankly things aren't looking good if you are a Chinese fan.

After 30 overs, Indian despite a slight sense of bother around the twentieth over has been getting to work rather well. Currently the run rate is hovering under 8 and India is looking poised to put up 350+, which may be too much for China to chase down.

Shi Gen gets the much needed breakthrough for China, and its the massive wicket of Vijay Kambli who was on 139 and was very likely going to score 200 had he not edged himself back into his own stumps. Can China try and turn momentum back in their favor with this break?

TARGET - CHINA NEED 359 RUNS FROM 50.0 OVERS @ 7.18 RUNS PER OVER

Welcome back to Lusail as India are taking to the field to defend 359 against China. The Chinese have never managed to chase this high of a total before but if they are to win the Asia Cup they must manage to do so against one of the best teams in the world. India should be favored here however in the game of Cricket, anything can happen. It'll be Indian allrounder Pramod Krishnakumar to open the bowling for India, whilst its Su Yaoting and Bai Chun opening the batting for China.

Its a good start for the Chinese as they get past 50 without losing a single wicket. More importantly they're managing to keep with the required run rate for now.

And now its 100 without loss as China's openers are managing to put pressure back on the Indians. Su Yaoting brings up his 50 whilst Bai Chun is right behind him. India desperately needs a breakthrough and quick since if these two just keep soaking in the pressure that required run rate will become easily chaseable.

INDIA FINALLY BREAKS THROUGH! Subrata Chatterjee came back into the attack after giving up 11 in his first over and proceeded to lockdown both Chinese batsmen, eventually managing to trap Su Yaoting in front of the wicket. A much earned reward for some economical bowling which has gotten the RRR closing in on eight an over, however India's immediate job is to get out China's biggest fish in the form of Du Wei.

Bai Chun brings up his third career century, a very mature knock from the 18 year old as China has began to regain control of the required run rate following some big overs. India once again needs to find some sort of breakthrough otherwise face certain defeat.

Huge moment in the game as Bai Chun gets himself out off a dolly from Zeeshan Khan! After bowling a no ball which some fans might accuse of being tactical, Chun swings for the fences only to mistime his shot and get easily caught at deep mid-wicket. This is a massive wicket which breaks the imposing Chun-Wei partnership and means China has to once again reform a partnership as China's captain Zhu Yusheng walks out to the middle.

OH AND YUSHENG'S BEEN BOWLED! Massive wicket for India as the Chinese skipper gets done in by the Pramod Krishnakumar special, just outright beats him and straight onto the stumps as the bails go flying. India have now gotten the entirety of China's top order out which exposes the much more inexperienced and inconsistent middle order, something that may change the entire direction of this game. If China is to win now it'll have to be off of the bat of Du Wei.

Du Wei is refusing to allow China to lose this game. He knows what must be done and is now pushing China to accelerate and win the game now while they still have batsmen to play with. The required run rate has fallen below six as India's bowlers are proving to be no match for Du Wei's aggression and his current partner Mao Shuren who is trying to keep pace with his more experienced batting partner. Mayas Kumble, the world #1 in ODI bowling as well has been having a miserable game, currently on 0/69 after 8 overs, 12 of those runs having just come off of his last over where Du Wei sent him to the boundary rope for three straight fours. Hold onto your hats people because this game may just turn out completely different then what everyone was expecting!

Good fightback overs from India as only three and five runs came off the last two overs which has gotten the required run rate back above six. Asif Zaidi has bowled well today for someone who initially wasn't on the starting XI, perhaps he is worth some more investment as a good bowling option for India.

It has been a marvelous innings from Du Wei and with his fifteen runs off of Pramod Krishnakumar and seven off of Subrata Chatterjee he reaches his seventh ever international century! Those two overs may have just costed India everything as the required run rate has plummeted below four and now I believe it is inevitable what is about to happen.

What in the world did we just witness here?! India for the first time in the history of ASCON has lost a game in the Asia Cup, ending the belief that they were invincible and busting the myth in quite possibly the most viewed ASCON event in history! The question now is what exactly were wrong for India? Well India's batsmen managed to set a target of 359 for China to chase, a total which is normally unreachable for most teams barring a perfect innings so despite some stumbles by a few of India's batsmen I don't believe their performance was the reason India lost. Rather it came down to a weakened Indian bowling lineup which couldn't make use of the wicket to the same extent as China's bowlers did and looked a lot less threatening to the opposing batsmen. The biggest sinner in that lineup being Mayas Kumble who had quite possibly the worst game of his international career at quite possibly the worst possible time, going 0/90 and being easy pickings for China's batsmen. Despite these issues, India does have the benefit of having the ability to fall back on the fact that two of their important bowling options in Milkha Singh and Shubman Kotak were both out with injury, players who could of potentially turned the tide in India's favor and gotten them their third Asia Cup title, however this year is going to go down as one big What-if, as well as being the year that India lost the prestigious honor of being Asia's only undefeated side.

1717407200308.png

As for China what else can be said other than the fact that their batsmen played near-perfectly today. 359 is a total that is in no capacity easy to chase, however when your batsmen are playing the game near-perfectly any total becomes easy to run down. The only major stumble from the Chinese in their innings today was from Zhu Yusheng, who went for 18 however other then him every single Chinese batsman contributed nicely to the run chase. Bai Chun and Du Wei both played incredible innings whilst Su Yaoting and Mao Shuren both performed well in supporting roles to guide China over the line against a, if not full strength Indian bowling attack, but a still high-quality bowling attack that can defeat most teams around the world and on paper that attack should of crushed China under their thumbs. Instead China defied the odds and the expectations of nearly all pundits to slay Asia's giant and secure their first major piece of silverware. China still has a long way to go as a cricketing nation but this victory has cemented China's place as not just a cricketing nation, but one that is now well-established on the world stage.

India's invincibility challenged, nay, shattered! Incredible final to cap off an incredible tournament. China were a little middling in the Swiss Stage, but they turned it up in the finals and emerged as the champions, deservedly. India, well, it's the same old tale - dominate throughout and then lose when it matters the most. Even though they walked all over the other teams in the first two seasons, and this tournament as well (up until the final) - having more competition in the form of tougher teams was always going to result in those tendencies popping back up again.

Thank you for hosting the Asia Cup once again @isFEISARfair. :cheers
