Niue got off to a timid start after being put into bat first by New Zealand, with their openers adopting a watchful approach against threatening new ball spells from Emile Leannon and Martin Franecki. Kiwi pacers kept things tight but some loose bowling from Clinton Hintz allowed Niuean batters to release some pressure. Even though Clinton Hintz was taken for 16 runs in his 2.0 overs in the powerplay, Niue's scoring rate was an unimpressive 5.00 with their scoreline reading 35/0 at the end of the 7th over. The pressure of dot balls kept on building until eventually Misikea Feleti caved in and nicked one to Thad Wolf behind the stumps to give New Zealand their first breakthrough of the match. Nia Tutakitoa-Williams rather tragically, and amusingly, ran himself out while trying to sneak a single off a wide when Rembrant Marcelino knocked down the stumps from leg slip not even a full two overs after Feleti's dismissal.

With a couple of wickets lost in quick succession, and runs all dried up, Niue needed to counterattack against a rampaging Kiwi bowling lineup. In came Jayson Okesene, who tore down the Kiwis to smash 42 runs from a mere 22 deliveries before being unluckily run short of his crease by New Zealand's captain. Despite his untimely dismissal, his innings brought life back into Niue's innings, which they desperately needed, because at that point in time it seemed as though New Zealand were running away with the game unchallenged. Jayson Okesene's perfect counterattacking knock, coupled with a fiery little cameo from Dalton Nemani in the death-overs powered Niue to a respectable 147 for 5 despite them struggling to hold a bat straight for the better half of their innings.

A sensational contest comes to an end! Niue hold on to a stunning 10-run win following a barnburner against their Oceanian rivals in the last game of the first round. New Zealand were off to a horrific start with Talaititama Holo and Faleuka Tagelagi wreaking havoc on the Kiwi top-order, reducing them to 25/3 by the end of the 5th over. With New Zealand's backs against the walls, things only got worse as they lost two wickets in two deliveries at the end of the 7th over.

At the end of which, their scoreline read 36/5, with 112 runs still required from 78 deliveries. Half of their team was back in the hut, but New Zealand were not going to go down without a fight. With their backs now truly against the walls, New Zealand captain Michel Gottlieb and Rembrant Marcelino stitched up a 70-run stand from just 53 deliveries to get the Kiwis within an earshot of the win. Before their partnership was brought to a screeching halt, New Zealand's required equation was 42 runs from 26 deliveries. Entirely achievable, and it probably would've been achieved had there not been another collapse triggered by Rembrant Marcelino's dismissal. Rembrant Marcelino and Michel Gottlieb lost their wickets in the space of six deliveries, which all but confirmed New Zealand's loss.

New Zealand required 28 runs from 18 deliveries, which was brought down to 16 from 12 after a wayward Daniel Emani over. With Trace Roberts, New Zealand's hero from a month ago, still at the crease, it was still anyone's game. Until it wasn't. Duken Talaiti bowled a spectacular final over to Trace Roberts, squeezing him for three back-to-back-to-back dot balls before finally getting the better of the batter on the fourth ball to wrap up New Zealand's innings 10 runs short of Niue's total.
