Well i feel the following reasons contributed to criticism:
1. 11 host nations leading to travel problems
2. Good Friday as mentioend by La-ICe in the first post
3. Flawed format leading to India-Pak exit.
4. The umpiring gaffe in the final and also a 38-over final.
5. Ticket price !
