It's genuinely frustrating, baffling, and maddening to see the biggest sporting event of Pakistan end up like this for the second time in a row. The last season was unfortunate, but this season PSL got postponed due to sheer ignorance and incompetence, and not adhering to the SOPs put in place. Firstly, which expert decided to make the 3-day quarantine rule? Worldwide 7 days is the minimum with the 14 days one being the most common. Symptoms can take up to a week to show so 7-day quarantine is an obligation.
Secondly, Sammy, Wahab, and Javed Afridi set a very wrong precedent by threatening to block the league just to avoid being quarantined after breaching the bubble. PCB also allowed them, because they returned 2 negative tests before the game, which set a wrong precedent. Many players were found secretly going outside the bubble (although staying in the hotel premises), through a backdoor staircase. A Multan Sultans foreign opener was found taking a selfie with a fan, and the spa & gym of the hotel were shared with the outsiders. Players' families joined the bubble midway, with only 1 negative test and no quarantine. Islamabad United played Fawad Ahmed in a game despite him having symptoms and QG players high-fived celebrities outside the bubble. Commentators, presenters, ground staff, team owners (except the KK and LQ owners) were none a part of the bubble. So, many freaking mishaps!
And to all those blaming PCB for the debacle, please cut them some slack. They organized 240 games in the bubble so far, including PSL, PAK vs SA, PAK vs ZIM, NT20 etc, and this was the last event of the calendar for them. The real problems arose when these franchise owners and their cheap publicity stunts got involved. The PCB CEO categorically mentioned in his presser that many stakeholders were warned for the breaches.
And the biggest problem now is going to be hosting AUS (twice), ENG (thrice), WI, NZ etc in the next year or so. PCB would really need to up their game to make sure that these sides do visit after this debacle.
